Yesterday was #FreddieHubbard born day celebration. He would have been 85.

By 1984 Hubbard was established as the world's preeminent Jazz trumpeter. His appearance on Letterman 14-years after he appeared on the Dick Cavett show as part of the Jazz And People's Movement protest, made the Letterman appearance disappointing.

Two long form pieces of research, How Downbeat Editor Dan Morgenstern turned his back on him, an in depth look at the "Songmy" +treatment of African American'a in Vietnam.

You have to hear the unedited #FreddieHubbard solo on the #BillyJoel track "Zanzibar." I think it's one of the best solos I've heard from him. It's like a short anthology of Freddie's signature licks, techniques, and styles. He's swinging hard and coming up with something imaginative to say with every phrase. The solos are at 3:04 and 4:19.

"Invitation" by #StanGetz, #4. on the list, as far as I'm aware, Creed never produced this track with Getz, although he did do versions with Kai Winding, and Ca Tjader and possibly Quincy Jones circa 1957, not Getz.

There is no #FreddieHubbard album or track called "The King" and I can't find any record of this nomination at http://grammys.com - Freddie did win his only GRAMMY on the Cred Taylor produced "First Light" at the 15th awards in 1972.

Here's a good, detailed review of Brad Mehldau's latest, and an informed overview of the history of jazz covers of Beatles tunes. (I disagree with dismissing George Benson's "The Other Side of Abbey Road," by the way--I think it's brilliant, and it's worth it just for the earthy Freddie Hubbard solo on "Come Together".)
