"Far away from Europe and far from its wars", in the midst of ongoing conflicts in 16th century Europe, Ronsard was yearning to escape. He invited his friends to leave with him and sail westward to the Fortunate Islands. The "Byrd of America", bottom left, is inspired by the Oxburg Hangings Mary Stuart embroidered while captive. Auguste Arnault was a Parisian journalist and writer whose artist friends included sculptors Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle. He retired in Trôo where Bourdelle was a regular visitor, which led to the famous sculptor designing the village war memorial. Bourdelle also produced a pencil drawing of Arnault, as a study for an eventual marble bust. I painted this oil based on Bourdelle's drawing. Oil on canvas, 28 x 18.5 inches, 2022.
