Dorothy Arzner's Merrily We Go to Hell (1932) is a romantic melodrama with some humour and while it addresses a serious issue (alcoholism) it does so in a characteristically pre-code way.

It has lots of pre-code naughtiness but mixes licentiousness with a grown-up awareness that sex and fun have emotional implications.

Early in "Seven Days in May", #fredricmarch shines as a change-seeking president. The film's early promise is snuffed out by the stiff performances of #burtlancaster and #kirkdouglas as a general planning a coup and an aide who exposes him. The stiffness is catching. #avagardner and #johnhouseman, two actors who often needed reining in by directors, seem to have been sedated by this one. It's hard for the audience to get excited about a possible coup when the actors don't much care.

Two actors who often needed reining in and didn't get it, give bloodless performances here: #johnhouseman appears literally to be on tranquilizers and #avagardner barely registers. #film

Design for Living (1933)

A film about the relationship between three impoverished artists who set up house in Paris - via a gentleman's agreement it's all meant to be very platonic - which of course is the comedy. The original 1932 play had been written by Noel Coward to be performed by him and his two close friends Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt. It's a lot of fun and still holds up quite well. You forgot how interesting relational experiments were in the 1930's, and what a stifling effect the Hays Code had on U.S. culture (and us, through it's export and dominance).

要不是小说里设定男主是老头子，三月哥变身前的样子能干翻很多后面那些演怪医的。当然变身后的样子也一样，全版本少有的毁容级演出效果，也是早期海斯法典颁布前电影特效化妆时期最后的倔强。
