@bob Is LibreServer the new name for FreedomBone? I must have missed that. What motivated the name change?
Hey @homegrown I've just seen your related project page and I noticed you did not mention #FreedomBone but then I realized its name changed to #LibreServer!
https://libreserver.org/
https://freedombone.net/
Good work! ;-)
@Blort wow, selamat siang, Blort! Saya terkejut Anda bisa berbahasa Indonesia. Terima kasih!
Back to English: I saw you mentioned three excellent projects:
1. #Yunohost https://yunohost.org
2. #Freedombone https://freedombone.net
3. #Freedombox https://freedombox.org
so I was adding the fourth yesterday:
4. #Mailinabox https://mailinabox.email
Thanks, your thread was amazing.
PS: Mailinabox is not my project as I am only doing teaching and cannot code at all.
#mailinabox #freedombox #freedombone #YunoHost
@ajroach42
As with so many other things, the real solution would be two things:
1. Support decentralized systems wherever possible (financial, using for your creations, submit code, help with triaging or community support, documentation, translation etc)
2. We need to massively simplify self hosting. Currently #Yunohost #Freedombone #Freedombox seem the best options, but all need to simplify more of the technical side for normal users. Helping out these projects would help greatly, too.
#yunohost #freedombone #freedombox
@Gina I'm all for owning and controlling our data but not for selling our data because that would be ethically wrong. It eventually would corrupt us. Besides Mastodon and the Fediverse in general prove that we can own and control our data without selling it. Other (and IMHO better) projects for owning and controlling data are #Freedombox, #freedombone and #TinCan.
#freedombox #freedombone #TinCan
Epicyon is a new Fediverse server being developed by Freedombone developer Bob Mottram

@grumpy_developer@mastodon.technology @dansup @yunohost
Also worth mentioning though are #Freedombox #LollipopCloud and #Freedombone.
I would LOVE to see any/all of the projects mentioned collaborate on the problems mentioned in my previous toot, as they're all problems that ALL of your projects would benefit from having solutions to.
#freedombox #lollipopcloud #freedombone
Ha, looks like #Freedombone actually does this (making stuff accessible over Tor in order to punch thru firewalls). Good deal.
I'm at a point where it's fewer spoons to roll my own than to learn Freedombone, so I'm gonna reinvent the wheel for now, but it's still deeeefinitely on my list of stuff to test out for usefulness in a #cyberpunklife
@bob I thought along similar lines before.
If the FreedomBox app for Android can provide a SearX search widget, then users can replace their Google search widget with that.
#freedombox #freedombone #searx
@bob ...and mail server best practises can be automated. Efforts like #freedombone that make self hosting email and other services more accessible are important to the health of the Internet.
Email his in a very sick state as Google has ruined its originally federated nature. It needs #refederation even more than the web!
My life may soon become #ultramobile. I may be laptop & desktop free for the first time in 20 years.
Ideas:
• My #cubieboard 2 + 500GB SSD + 802.11ac wifi dongle + dual-band antennas + RGB light strip + 12V supply + misc parts = portable low power accent light which is a web server & write-through cache of my cloud drive (aka a custom stealth #freedombone in a lamp)
• What if there were a non-sucky Android tablet that could also run a mainstream Linux distro on its display? Does that exist?
#ultramobile #cubieboard #freedombone
@bob I am now seeding both the #freedombox and #freedombone websites using hypercored on an always on server.
@bob I agree Plinth is not very adaptable for other purposes.
I think I tried out #freedombone last year and was scared of bash. Should give it another shot.
The last time I tried writing a significant amount of shell scripts was in a Makefile we had in plinth/doc. I gave up after 2 days, implemented the whole functionality in a Python file and called it with command line arguments in the Makefile. 🤐
@Sw0rdDooM not specifically with #freedombone but I do recommend #syncthing and #nextcloud
#freedombone #syncthing #nextcloud
While looking at #freedombone I discovered https://pleroma.social/ which seems to be a #mastodon compatible implementation (with #gnusocial too). It would appear to be tailored for light memory usage...
Frontend looks very similar to #mastodon
Again #diversity is good
#freedombone #mastodon #gnusocial #diversity
Just discovered another alternative to #freedombox #yunohost #cloudron #labriqueinternet : https://freedombone.net/ #freedombone
"Email, chat, VoIP, web sites, file synchronisation, wikis, blogs, social networks, media hosting, backups, VPN. Freedombone is a home server system which enables you to self-host all of these things. "
based on #debian
List of apps : https://freedombone.net/apps.html
#diversity is good
#freedombox #yunohost #cloudron #labriqueinternet #freedombone #debian #diversity
@bob Maybe it can support #Freedombone too in the future with a few modifications.
A tech-savvy user installs Freedombone/Box for their family and the rest of the family members simply use the app without having to deal with Freedombone command-line or the FreedomBox web interface.
@lain Yup. I'm gonna see if I can get it working without such a thing, as my budget is $0 😅
If it doesn't work though, I'll end up cobbling a similar solution together I'm sure.
The #FreedomBone model appeals to me, though I haven't set one of those up. I suspect the neofeudal nomadic class will only grow, the easier to #selfhost the better, at least for some stuff.
okay next we need #freedombone to be portable and re-establish its ability to serve with DDNS etc when unplugged from one house and reconnected in another
