Exciting to see how @kiwix, #FreedomBox and #Debian are used to bring #Wikipedia content (and more!) to villages where internet access isn't an option
#freedombox #debian #wikipedia #kiwix #debconf
I have come to the conclusion that #Debian is not good for packaging applications software, but it's great for systems software. I will continue to search for alternatives that work well with the requirements of #FreedomBox.
(I expect anybody who replies to this with a contradiction to accept the challenge of Debian packaging a full NodeJS application in a reasonable amount of time and keeping up with the updates.)

@morgandawn @tobi Yes.
#FreedomBox was used to set up digital services in remote rural areas with no good Internet connectivity. You can read the documentation about FreedomBox community deployments in this wiki book.
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/FreedomBox_for_Communities
When FreedomBox was deployed in villages in India, it was configured to be the DHCP server connected to several Wi-Fi access points spread throughout the village.
If you have a specific use case in mind, please discuss it on the forum.
Has anyone started to use this self-hosting #server? #FreedomBox
"Run your digital services from your home
FreedomBox is a private server for non-experts: it lets you install and configure server applications with only a few clicks. It runs on cheap hardware of your choice, uses your internet connection and power, and is under your control"
I like the idea (and implementation) of http://freedombox.org, but I've been struggling to find a use case. I finally figured it out today.
Freedombox's support for public and federated services (email, Matrix, Wordpress, etc.) made me think it wanted to be public self-hosting, but now I realize it's intended for completely private or even disconnected self-hosting, even if the services it bundles are usually public.
You know, just like it says on the website.
Are there standard #Debian 12 images for the #Olimex #Pioneer ready for download? I.e. a base system without the #Freedombox software, which I currently do not need?
https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox/Hardware/PioneerEdition
Ideally with #ext4, not #btrfs? I'm too lazy to build it myself 😞 TIA!

@bblfish @sflc Self hosting even with all the excellent work out into #FreedomBox will always be harder than signing up to a service.
I believe #p2p can be easier than both, so that's another area to push forward.
And there's no reason why a useful portion of the #SolidProtocol and Solid apps can't be a part of that, because I have already demonstrated the feasibility on a #SafeNetwork test net.

We Engineers are also responsible for this shift towards censorship. Over 12 years ago, Eben Moglen of the
@sflc introduced the #FreedomBox and painted a very dark picture of where we were heading and indeed where we are now. https://youtube.com/watch?v=sKOk4Y4inVY
No wonder #censorship is now thought to be the new normal!
We need to put #Solid on that box for it to work fully, and we need apps that make it easy to use.

I've maintained a page in my Notable Public Keys book about the #Element client for some years (I used it until a #FreedomBox SD Card died and I never got around to reinstalling `matrix-synapse`). It's pleasing to see I had noted the name of the interviewee, Mathew Hodgeson along with the #PGP signing key fingerprints. #matrixchat https://reboil.com/npk.pdf

I really enjoyed FLOSS Weekly 688 “Matrix.org”. I definitely will be installing `matrix-synapse` onto my #FreedomBox when it gets added to Debian Bookworm Backports. I love the idea of operating my own text / voice / video / VR server that works for my local household even if the house's ISP is down. https://twit.tv/shows/floss-weekly/episodes/688
I just uploaded freedombox 23.12~bpo12+1 for bookworm-backports. Since it is the first upload to bookworm-backports, it will need to be manually approved.

I started adding new diagnostic checks to #FreedomBox, focusing on essentials like firewall, users, and apache configurations. Next I will add a daily test for the most important diagnostic checks, and a notification for the administrator if anything fails.
@sennoma @misc @JessTheUnstill How about a larger #freedombox enclosure, containing a power supply, some storage, and network ports. The thing doesn't need screen or keyboard. User can just visit the start page, and get going!
@Canageek @mpjgregoire
i ran osmc on a rpi2 and it was mostly ok. got fullhd but some codecs didn't work because of lack of acceleration support. much happier with a minipc running proper #debian, #kodi and #freedombox
Mein Server ist aktualisiert und läuft rund. Fein, fein. #freedombox #Debian #Bookworm
This is the best #speech on #FreeSoftware I heard so far:
Eben Moglen on Freedom in the cloud.
Who is this guy and why doesn't he sell t-shirts with his face on the front?

Today, I was setting up a development environment for #FreedomBox in a Debian virtual machine. Firefox is too expensive to run in the VM (it was crashing in a loop).
Fortunately Gnome Web, a.k.a Epiphany is stable and light enough to run with the limited resources.
