The street I live on doesn't have continuous #sidewalks (because #Vancouver can't afford nice things), it has #FreeParking on both sides, there's enough space for one car to pass and a bit of extra room. Similar to the picture.

People walk on the road. Some drivers slow down when passing, but most maintain the speed.

It's terrifying. I got used to it when biking, but sharing the road with vehicles when #walking is a whole new thing. What should I do, tAkE tHe LanE? Ridiculous.

Nothing has prepared me for civic engagement around bike lanes more than playing tower defense games. Sheesh! This one debate on this project began in 2018, and, well, here we are, still fighting off people who care more about #FreeParking than #ClimateChange or #RoadViolence.

There’s something deeply suspicious that suddenly everyone cares about whether or not a nurse can afford to get to work because of #freeParking, not #affordableHousing, or #publicTransport, or better pay, says Dr. Liz Taylor.

“There will be car dependent individuals in need, and we need to find a way to accommodate their needs. But giving everybody free parking in the name of those particular people doesn’t seem efficient,” says @PaulBarter.

@BreadAndSalt I'm just this eternal optimist who thinks maybe the newspaper or some of its readers could question whether finding a loophole in "cruel and unusual punishment" is going to save us from witnessing #houselessness under a freeway ramp on our way to a #freeParking spot, or even just don't print all police reports verbatim as news, IDK.

This is a much better choice than free parking, which is traditionally a "thing" in the lead-up to Christmas. It's a shame it will only be on one Saturday, but it's a step in the right direction and shows a shift in thinking. Other councils should take note.
