As today is βI love Free softwareβ day (#ILoveFS), here are a couple of recent blogposts:
- running my law firm on Linux, a year in: https://decoded.legal/blog/2022/10/running-a-law-firm-on-linux-a-year-or-so-in
- my #FreeSoftwareAdvent list from last year, with 24 pieces of #FreeSofrware that I like: https://neilzone.co.uk/2022/12/freesoftwareadvent-all-my-free-software-suggestion-posts-in-one-place

#FreeSoftwareAdvent: all my Free software suggestion posts in one place.
From 1 December 2022, I thought it would be fun to do one post per day about a piece of Free / open source software, that I value.
Here's the combined list:

Well, that wraps up #FreeSoftwareAdvent for this year.
If it has been useful, please do let me know. Obviously, it has only scratched the surface of the FOSS I use every day.
And if you didn't like it, well, that's useful feedback too!
The last piece of FOSS in this year's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is the open source vulnerability scanner, Greenbone / OpenVAS (@greenbone):
I use its scheduled tasks to do authenticated scanning of all the hosts on my network, to check for vulnerabilities. Even with unattended-updates running, it has helped me pick up bits I've missed.
For small networks, it runs fine on a Raspberry Pi.
New discovery of FOSS software in 2022 helped my writing workflow much improved and me focus on writing.
Plus light entertainment to wind down...
And they are soooo good.
vale linter
Pagure
GNOME text editor
Podman and Toolbox
Antora
AsciiDoc
Boxes
Fedocal
gcc
Espeak NG
Shotcut
Metadata cleaner
GIMP
Flatpak
Matrix / Element
Shortwave
What's your most used FOSS software?
This might be a @gnome -specific one, but I am a fan of Internet radio, and my desktop player of choice is Shortwave:
https://apps.gnome.org/en-GB/app/de.haeckerfelix.Shortwave/
Internet radio is a still a thing, despite Spotify etc., and there are plenty of great ad-free streams/stations.
For "knowledge management" / keeping a record of useful information, I rather like a wiki, and dokuwiki is a very lightweight, flat-file, wiki system.
I'm so pleased with it, especially with the MFA and Markdown plugins.
My #FreeSoftwareAdvent tool of the day is DarthSim's Overmind https://github.com/DarthSim/overmind
Simple way to do process management using a Procfile.
Spawn multiple processes from one command, with basic lifecycle management β restart processes on demand or automatically.
Not for everyday usecases, but helped me a couple of times.

Didn't get around to doing a #FreeSoftwareAdvent post yesterday, so here's today's.
Every developer reaches a breaking point with the pain of dependency management. pips, gems, npms, apts, brews, ugh. Once you hit that point, containers are the only sane way out. Enter Docker, a great idea, marred by the constraints of VC funding (hence premium subscriptions).
#Podman is the drop-in replacement so we have something to fall back on when the VC $$$ runs out.

@simonbs I totally feel your angst. I, too, am desperate to get a spot on the @ivory alpha.
For your information, I was made aware by @neil (from his #FreeSoftwareAdvent posts) that there's an awesome open-source URL monitoring solution called 'urlwatch':
https://github.com/thp/urlwatch
I've been using it for Ivory (unsuccessfully). Apologies for sitting on that info, I wasn't keen to shout about it as I, too, am desperate for a slot! :)
If you want a self-hosted web-based secure file transfer system with email notifications, zend.to is worth a look:
I've used this for about six years now. Officially, it doesn't work on a Raspberry Pi, but it can, with only minor tinkering.
(I've also heard good things about wormhole, which takes a very different approach.)
#FreeSoftwareAdvent I install this set of #linux utilities anywhere I can.
moreutils β homepage https://joeyh.name/code/moreutils/
ts β easily add a timestamp to stdout, great for adding to logs when timestamps are not already there
prallel β exactly what it says
mispipe β pipe two commands but get the error code of just the first one
vipe β vi for your piped input
Check out the full list in the link above.
What #UXDesign software can you talk about in the #FreeSoftwareAdvent Christmas calendar?
Tag your posts with #FreeSoftwareAdvent.
A very nice thing, personally, is the connection between our @opensourcedesign community and Penpot.
https://blog.kaleidos.net/FOSDEM2020-UXBOX-Presentation/
We've had Penpot talks at our FOSDEM design track over the years:
https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/event/penpot_design_freedom_for_teams/
That's it for today. What is YOUR #FreeSoftwareAdvent post for today?
#freesoftwareadvent #freeopensourcesoftware #UXDesigners
Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent calendar post is Penpot, @penpot
Penpot is a wireframing, prototyping for teams - for #UXDesigners, developers, product people, everyone involved in the software creation process.
It is web first - works on all operating systems, uses open web standards (SVG), and open source.
Those with interest can self-host it themselves, or use the public service design.penpot.app. Releases are big with lots added.

The idea that you should #CRM your family and friends might seem strange, even offensive to some. That's what I like about #OpenSource -- Someone out there has probably done it and you can use it too. Using https://www.monicahq.com/, I can keep track of my interactions with my loved ones and distant folk too. I also found the journaling function useful too. Somebody is gonna claim you can do this in Notion. But you can self-host this , and keep its contents 100% to yourself. #freesoftwareadvent

My goodness, how I have I only heard about #FreeSoftwareAdvent on the *20th*? Ridiculous, I say.
Still, I'll throw in a shoutout to https://changedetection.io/ which is a FANTASTIC utility which monitors things for you, and uses Apprise to notify you (which support tons of services, I send mine over Matrix, ofc)
It can regex, filter, wait for text to disappear ("Out of stock" perhaps?) and even use a headless Chrome session to load Javascript (and even execute a search form or login page). Superb.
