Since I'm bitching about #freesw licensing again, I've been reading some #GNU stuff and I can't help but think that this sentence in the #GCC exception 3.0 is a lawyer bomb:

"The availability of this Exception does not imply any general presumption that third-party #software is unaffected by the #copyleft requirements of the license of GCC."

I feel like a sufficiently malicious lawyer can easily argue that this invalidates the entire exception and land a whole lot of devs in hot water.

The fact that anyone has to specify that a freely distributed work may be expanded upon and redistributed should show that even in the #freesw movement none of us are truly free. Only the #PublicDomain can guarantee that. #RMS knew this, but he chose instead to embrace #copyright. He was a traitor to its own movement even before its inception.

I really forgot how much hands-on setup is required to run #FreeBSD. It's incredible that it's been around this long and still hasn't seen a lot of the ease-of-use additions that even basic Linux systems have. It's a fine operating system, don't get me wrong, but I get exhausted now just trying to get it connected to a network, and that's on a virtual machine!

Ruffle seems to be coming along nicely. There are a bunch of historical #Flash games and videos that were briefly completely unplayable, but a lot of them seem to be up-and-running now.

For those not in the know, Ruffle is a #FLOSS #webdev extension that converts ActionScript into #WebAssembly so they can be played in modern browsers without needing an out-of-date Flash browser plugin. Website below if you'd like to contribute ;-)

The longer I go on the more I have trouble telling the difference between #copyright and #copyleft. In one instance you can only use a product by provisionally waiving your right to distribute modifications except as permitted in a contractual agreement with the distributors, and the other is copyright.

So apparently the #OSI, an organization which only exists to arbitrarily give a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down to #opensource software licenses, is expanding their scope "beyond license approval." It's not really clear what that means, which makes me nervous.

Not long ago there were efforts by the likes of Coraline Ada Ehmke to infiltrate the #freesw movement and undermine the #meritocracy that makes #FOSS software work. We'll have to keep an eye on this; the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

A misunderstanding is circulating that the GNU Project demands you run 100% free software, all the time. Anything less (90%?), and we will tell you to get lost—they say. Nothing could be further from the truth.
