Interesting juxtaposition of everyday life, revolution, and state violence in an early 20th-century short by film pioneer Alice Guy. Gender, class, and respectability also figure in this tale, which features a nonchalant summary execution.

Amy Livingstone will give her Inaugural Lecture as Head of the Lincoln School of Humanities on "Finding Ermengarde: Researching the Life of a Medieval Countess."
Although she was recognized by her peers as influential and important, Countess Ermengarde (c.1070-1147) has been left out of the history of medieval Europe. This lecture will explore her accomplishments, such as co-ruling Brittany with her husband and adult son, her generous patronage and support of the church, her travel to the Holy Land – where she built a church, and her friendships with some of the most influential individuals of the 12th century. As well as discussing Ermengarde and her experiences, this lecture will address the scholarly process of finding Ermengarde.

An American from 1833 commenting on how much glass there is in Paris. I love his metaphor: "the frequent glass realizes the idea of every one's carrying a window in his bosom." #FrenchHistory #nineteenthcentury #histodons

Illustrations from the magazine "L'Illustration" for the Exposition coloniale internationale 1931 in Paris.
This issue of the magazine is a great resource that I found in our library and will discuss with my students tomorrow in the seminar on the history of Morocco.
@jonathanwyrtzen has based his chapter 2 in "Making Morocco" on the structure of the Moroccan pavilion - very interesting reading, very well done! Looking forward to the discussion in the seminar!

The next piece was a lot of fun to write - thinking about the relevance of the French Revolution today, while rescuing Robespierre from the stereotypes thrown his way over time. https://ageofrevolutions.com/2022/08/08/thoroughly-modern-maxie-robespierres-relevance-for-democracy-today/ #histodons #FrenchRevolution #Frenchhistory

This was one of my favorite publications of the year - esp. because I started working on this project in the 1990s & it took a lot of LIFE for me to have time and wisdom to publish it properly.
