I had a chance to pick up a used Holton H602 single French horn for a really good price. A lot of wear and tear, but the levers are fine and none of the tuning slides were stuck. Plays pretty well. It should be fun to learn. The trombone is my primary instrument, so it’s hard to get used to the French horn mouthpiece. 😂

@brassmusic Welcome to this instalment of Hathersage Band's Wonderful World of Brass Instruments.
This week it's the turn of The Marching French Horn!
Developed for players who wished to play in a , but whose regular instrument was not only awkward to hold whilst marching, it's bell faced the wrong way!
They are pitched in Bb and have a lovely mellow tone, especially in the mid-range.
This example of unknown origin has a thumb operated tuning slide on the first valve.

@brassmusic Welcome to this week’s instalment of The Wonderful World Of Brass Instruments, this week it’s the turn of another Keyed Bugle!
This particular beast was made in Chicago in the 1960s & has 13 feet or FOUR metres of conical brass tubing that’s bright nickel plated. It’s single piston valve lowers the played note by a semitone. It’s played on a sized mouthpiece.
Never seen the light of day in a British but was once a common sight in the Marching Bands of America.

Part of my plan for my retirement/sabbatical is to really spend the time to learn jazz theory and then not only learn. Few standards but actually be able to improvise. Between my “native” French Horn, Flügelhorn, guitar and piano I need to train my ear to jeer intervals and to get better at transposing - among many, many things. So far 90 minutes each day between reading/studying, listening and some playing.

More uses for :

I printed a range of mouthpieces (throw-away for testing purposes) to see if I would prefer a deeper cup. Mouthpieces frequently cost $100 to $300 or more so buying one, trying it, hating it, and sending it back is very frustrating (sometimes in the US you can get mouthpieces on trial, it's not that easy in Canada though)

I've successfully chosen a new mouthpiece based on 3D printing which was able to give me a good idea of what a different mouthpiece from the ones I already have would be giving me.

For people wondering if a plastic (particularly 3D printed) mouthpiece can possibly play well enough to do this -- the answer is actually yes. No it's not going to be as good or perfect, metal has a resonance that's hard to reproduce in plastic, particularly plastic with layer-lines and small imperfections, but you know what? it doesn't sound bad at all and it was plenty for me to decide I like this brand and this particular size of mouthpiece.

Bit uncomfortable on the mouth for long-term use though, a little rougher than metal 😅 (print is done cup-up on the build plate). Might be a great print for this was done on .

Welp. Lost some feeling in my pinky finger yesterday. Didn't get it back today after sleeping which usually I do get feeling back in my fingers when I lose it (yay carpal tunnel).

This pinky is used to hook onto the
ring, so I think I really damaged it playing the new horn without my handstrap (between arthritis, carpal tunnel, circulation issues), some kind of nerve pinch I'm sure, hopefully I get the feeling back at some point. Good job, me, way to go.

I've installed the handstrap now. :blobsweats:

This is the "Corno da Tirarsi en Extremis" quite a large beast that I made up from a a in G, 1.5 metres of 1/2" and a horn! It's the first in a sextet of strange beasts that will hopefully get an outing before the end of year - watch this space!
