For this week’s #FridayFavorites I’d like to share Sia’s song ‘Alive’, from her album ‘This is Acting’.

I heard this song by chance one very dark day. It became my anthem during my early days of accepting and reconciling extreme codependency, unaddressed PTSD, self-destructive addiction, and deep hopeless depression.

‘This is the Law of Plague’ by Diamanda Galás, from her ‘Plague Mass’ performance / live-album.

Performed while topless and drenched in fake blood, at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in NYC, 1990, the performance was described as “a heart-wrenching cry about the physical suffering caused by the AIDS plague being compounded by the shameful arrogance of self-appointed moralists.” Her brother had died of AIDS in 1986.

I was thinking how I have a rather small physical music collection, yet it’s a wide range of genres. I think these favorites are favorites because of how they evoke such strong feelings in me. Similar with my paintings and how I want the viewer to have strong feelings evoked, just as I was feeling strongly while painting them.

So I thought, what about doing a series of sharing some favorites? Maybe a #FridayFavorites thing (gotta keep it alliterative!). And perhaps not limited to music?

I don't think #IlfordPhoto is on the Fediverse yet, and it's no longer #FridayFavorites, but with the launch of Kentmere in 120 I thought I would pitch in. I shot at least 100 ft of Kentmere 100 when I was getting back into photography, developed in caffenol-c-m when my kid was tiny and I kept chemistry to a minimum. I'd recommend anyone try it in Xtol. 👍 #ShotOnKentmere
