People in the interviewee's network would have access to the article on their blog. Or perhaps, alternatively, via a "friend link" shared by the interviewee.
I don't think the NYT would lose any subscribers. This would be a positive brand story for the paper. It might even help their reader acquisition.
Or perhaps they provide friend links already, maybe in a limited set-up, like VIP tickets?

I find it wry that this NYT article is gated by a paywall. Ironic that a data-driven advertising model would allow me to read it.
In a group meeting with a journalist yesterday, someone ventured if interviewees ever ask what's in it for them.
Made me muse if interviewees could negotiate shared publishing rights. As in: "Okay New York Times, let's agree that you publish this behind your paywall and I'll run it on my blog".
