Backyard fruit trees update.

We've harvested from all of our apple, yellow plum & Asian pear trees 3 times already. More fruits are ripening for more harvests. Our peach tree has been harvested 3 times already. We have about 3-4 harvests for that tree.

Any gardeners who haven't checked out etsy, you don't know what you are missing. I have found things I never seen in stores or nurseries. I've been feverishly buying bushes, trees, and vines everything! Seriously take a look at plants on etsy.

Three years ago, my partner gave me two sticks which she assured me were dwarf fruit trees. I dutifully planted them, and now indeed have a cherry and a plum tree thriving in containers on an upper-storey balcony. And this year, the plum has fruited! Birds or squirrels took most of the plums quickly, but I still have four which have made it this far and are starting to ripen. Note to gardeners in the west coast states in the U.S.
If you have apple trees check them! A few days ago I noticed rotten apples on one of my trees, all ripe months early. I lost at least 6 nice apples because they ripened so early.

Successful graft from last year looking good.

When we bought this place there were a heap of unidentified fruit trees in a total unkept state.

I've been slowly pruning them back and thinning them out. Last year I started grafting on some that were weedy plums. Great to see some success!

Will try some more this year after I've thinned a few more trees out.

Steve & Ben spend a day a week knocking doors on their estate offering to plant free fruit trees in folks' gardens. Today, they are out with fruit bushes looking for new homes.

They've had a brilliant response, and it's opened up many wonderful connections and conversations about traditional food crops amongst their diverse community.

Residents will have fresh fruit on their doorstep at zero cost. The group also offer workshops in thrifty growing and caring for fruit trees.

It's a direct response to the #costoflivingcrisis that also improves climate & biodiversity.

Here's what Steve says: "The most direct way of addressing food poverty is getting together with friends, family and community and growing it. It's surprisingly easy, it starts with a conversation over a brew. Be that person who puts the kettle on and invites folk round." ❤️
