Wie ich das Fediverse nach Einführung der Mastodon Volltextsuche durchforsten werde...

@mastodonadmin @JesseDraper While awaiting the gradual rollout of #FullTextSearch on h-net.social, the more basic ability to search user names & hashtag permutations, which used to work well, has ceased to do so for several days. What changed, & can this be reinstated please?
Previously we could search "Your Name" or part, & find contact details from across the fediverse; now nothing, even for someone already followed, we have to know exact @ name and server to locate an individual's posts... ?
New Mastodon achievement unlocked: full text search enabled. 🥳
Habe das hier wirklich vermisst und es funktioniert echt gut bis jetzt.

@vmstan Do I have this right: In #Mastodon 4.2, a person on a default server can opt-in to #FullTextSearch, even if the server has not installed that.
BUT, if a server installs full-text, all of its users' toots are searchable by full-text, and individuals cannot opt-out of full-text?

@JesseDraper Thanks Jesse. Many of us now looking forward to opt-in #FullTextSearch across all public posts, expected in v4.2, a huge improvement - & that will require #ElasticSearch to have been enabled on the instance: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/26344
It would be very helpful if we could take that first step now.

Rejoice people this is what you wanted, I still love my hashtags.

Also, how does this affect instances that don't send any such setting at all? Like if it's too old a Mastodon, or a non-Mastodon server? I bet Gargron is indexing those. Please fucking do not.
... in general, it feels like the people who want fulltext search don't really care about consent and are only doing this faux "opt in" thing for damage control.
"Will you opt-in to the search?"
No – and it's not "opt in" if you use subterfuge and reuse an existing setting. Stop trying to index people.
@MyWoolyMastadon @Carwil @mike I hope that #FullTextSearch comes to #Mastodon. #Search is the only way to help make #Mastodon a useful tool to find valuable information rather than randomly seeing what people post. #Hashtags #are #inferior. Mastodon now is like a library with good books randomly placed on assorted shelves.

Pointing out that the rest of the #Fediverse, not Mastodon, has #FullTextSearch on by default and this is why #ActivityPub was never private is not the full text search win you think it is. #MastoAdmin

@jo
I had a pretty extensive discussion yesterday about this, and I said roughly the same thing.
Their point (which I now see and agree with) is that while it is *technically* feasible and certainly *has* been happening, making the difficulty of doing full-text searches *trivial* results in a lower barrier of entry to low-motivated trolls and harassers.
Analogy: A determined person will can through a locked and deadbolted door. That doesn't mean you leave the door open.
Hey, I'm an instance admin who has been around for a while now.
I would only like to see full-text search as a feature if it is an opt-IN (e.g. off by default) feature, particularly when speaking of content originating elsewhere.
I would definitely be one of the people who would *choose* to opt-in. However, I know too many where that raises real concerns that I would be an asshat if I ignored or dismissed.
subpost:
"and some of the privacy demands are just not reasonable"? No. Fuck off. DO NOT INDEX US WITHOUT OUR CONSENT.
Mastodon as it was when we joined (not as it is now) showed us that it's /possible/ to have a world where that consent is important. That it's actually a thing we're allowed to care about.
Don't call us unreasonable and try to strip away our protections.

Big changes are coming to the #fediverse.
I have some thoughts on the future of the fediverse and what that means for my place in it.

@JesseDraper I see we're now on v4.1.6, with no downtime experienced here, thank you!
Would you please consider enabling #Elasticsearch? I understand this allows #FullTextSearch among our own individual posts, favourites, bookmarks & mentions, which would be very useful - I don't think there are any negatives to this?

#elasticsearch #fulltextsearch

I've been pondering the posts by @kissane and @siderea about 'not finding your people' #OnHere and am wondering if sentiments toward fediverse-wide #FullTextSearch have shifted at all. I know this has been implemented several times, and then been graciously shut down by developers who listened to community feedback.
