This is very worrying, & goes against what the #USA constitution is meant to represent. #religious #fundamentalism in no way lends itself to a fair democratic society. It promotes the erosion of people's rights (especially women) & a dumbing down of the populace, religion can only thrive in the vacuum of ignorance. We in the, west point to the middle east with scorn when we see similar repression, yet we sit on our hands as it happens in the US.

@reinedunord My parents are still IFB and now that I’m older I don’t feel the need to hide a whole lot anymore, but my wife and I hid the fact that we drink for many years, now we don’t actively hide it, but we don’t make a point of it either. There are a lot of issues like that, which precludes a lot of topics of conversations with my parents unfortunately. So many land mines.

I made my way out of the fear and hate and guilt of Bob Jones so I know what it’s like to have rewire your brain and your heart.

I watched "Shiny Happy People," the docuseries on the Duggar family, and I did not expect it to hit so close to home. I experienced so much of the way they were brought up, just dialed down a bit. I was #homeschooled until 4th grade, my father a preacher, I went to a conservative Christian school in Arkansas. The concept of "authority" was huge. Our behavior, as well as our thoughts, were moralized by threat of Hell.

I believe that was during the #Dubya years.
Things have only gotten worse since then. 🥥

Where does accountability lie?

When a person raised from birth to believe and become ignorant and hateful,

Do we blame them - call them names, labels

Or do we blame their teachers?

Maybe once they reform, repent, and make amends - then we say “they were not a bad person”
