Peoples' approach to Zoom memorial services are weird.
I put on my suit pants, dress shoes, and a button-down white shirt. Sure, I didn't wear the jacket and a tie.
But there are people showing up in t-shirts.
Is that weird? Or is it just me?
(yes, there is an in-person service that we're viewing, but...)
Okay, maybe it's just one guy in a t-shirt. Others at least have button-down shirts on.

I've attended ceremonies for the deaths of two acquaintances in the past week, here in New England.
Sad, of course, for us attendees. But for others: profitable.
Consider the price of flowers for a wake. A large spray: $400. A very nice floor-standing basket of blooms: $250. Each to be displayed for several hours at most.
They've found flower pollen in Paleolithic graves. We reach for beauty in the midst of the sadly ultimate ugliness. Should we count the cost?
Loss and grief can disrupt plans: African women who attend more funerals were more likely to have an unintended pregnancy.

A short viewpoint piece from our study of the impact of COVID on funeral practices. This looks at experiences of revisiting recorded funerals, not something many of us would have done previously. More papers to come.

Baltazar Lemos, a 60-year-old Brazilian #cerimonista and conductor of many #funerals, got to thinking about his #legacy after presiding over a service at which only two mourners had turned up. He decided to satisfy his curiosity by faking his death: one day, he posted a picture of himself on #SocialMedia outside a São Paulo hospital; the next day, he announced his demise.

The time has come to make a decision. It will be very difficult, because if I do this, I will no longer be able to attend #weddings and #funerals in churches. The decision is not to go into a #church again. Churches have wreaked as much damage to people, as corrupt police and politicians combined. It’s a number that cannot be calculated or counted. This might also mean missing out on #musicevents like a Bach concert, which would be a terrible #shame. But there it is. Today, I am giving this some serious thought.

Here's my #SundayStory of this week. It's another one that I wrote quite a few years ago. The title comes from a Jane Hirshfield poem, Each Happiness Ringed By Lions: https://poetryarchive.org/poem/each-happiness-ringed-lions/
Enjoy.
(There is no photo description, since it's the full text of the story. I will mail the story to those who need & want it delivered as a regular text file.)

@pablo The problem is that #Recovery efforts after a disaster (#insurance claims, #repairs, replacements, #rebuilds, temporary #accommodation, #food, #healthcare, #travel expenses, #funerals, #emergency services, #LegalFees, etc…) all contribute to #GDP.
Theoretically, ongoing #ClimateChange events could be considered good for productivity. The next #GrowthMarket.

Intelligence Update: Russian General Valery Gerasimov believes in better dressed and clean shaven dead bodies. (Funeral homes applaud stiffer regulations)
I think it points to the fact, there is little else they can do other than die.

Attending my third funeral service since September has revealed to me that funerals, while still somber church celebrations, are no longer the gathering of black suits and dresses that I grew up believing them to be.
Sadly, of the three, two were of children preceding their parents, which as a parent… that shit sucks.

A portrait of my ceramicist friend Ann Bates, who makes funerary urns and other things. Beautiful work:
Megan Hess and her mother operated a funeral home in Montrose, Colorado — but they secretly sold body parts behind the scenes.
Gruesome, I feel so bad for the bereaved. What a heartless couple!
