Chronological order of ancient Egyptian funerary texts
Pyramid Texts, Coffin Texts, Book of the Dead
While all of these #funerary texts contain #spells to protect the deceased in the #afterlife they reflect different ideas about its nature and localization.

An interesting paper on wartime memorials and how the era of more mass casualties away from home interacted with the #funerary #traditions in Serbia.

#queens is known for many things: #jfk and #lga airports, #nymets, #WorldsFairs and #rockawaybeach. But did you know it is the #cemetery capital of #nyc and likely of the entire #UnitedStates ? It has more than 25 cemeteries, with #calvarycemetery by far the largest with at least 1.75 million interments. Some are like parks, with amazing #funerary #sculpture. Others are perfect settings for #horrormovies At least in that sense, it is a #genealogists paradise #newyorkcity

St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen. The tomb of Patrick Scougall, Bishop of Aberdeen, died 1682: King Death reunites Scougall with his wife. Death looks rather like a bad stage magician revealing the outcome of his trick.

Hey y'all, my #introduction. I'm a #folklorist and writer based in Durham, NC, USA. My work focuses on the cultural heritage of the American South, especially the Carolinas. I also play old-time music (fiddle and banjo), and collect 78 rpm records and old photos.
I direct a nonprofit called the North Carolina Folklife Institute (ncfolk.org), which documents and supports traditional arts and artists; and I edit the Old-Time Herald (oldtimeherald.org), a magazine about traditional music.
Currently I'm collaborating with potter and historian Hal Pugh on a history of Southern folk #pottery, planned for release by @uncpress in fall 2024. We're also researching #gravestones and other #funerary folk art in the South.
My profile name refers to "For I will consider my cat Jeoffry...", the passage of Christopher "Kitty" Smart's 1760 religious poem "Jubilate Agno," in which he observes the workings of God through his adored and nonchalantly talented cat, Jeoffry.

Of course I do not intend to equal modern-day (or even historic) #funerary customs (like e.g. #SkyBurial in Asia) with prehistoric practices.
But #analogies like these do imho provide a useful frame to evaluate the archaeological data along a large variety of human responses towards #death - and the treating the #dead.

#Neolithic #Catalhöyük (also Turkey) does indeed as well show a noteworthy complexity of #funerary ritual.
In this context in particularly interesting is the removal of #skulls from #burials, their #replastering and #circulation among the settlement.
This and the practice of '#secondary' (i.e. re-) burial seems a particular phenomenon of the later phases pf occupation at #Catalhöyük:
