Got this gem today, an aesthetic movement apprentice piece (or shop sample) wash stand. It’s just 25cm tall and as detailed as a full size version. Always wanted an “apprentice piece” but they’re always either a fortune or not actually an apprentice piece (home made doll’s furniture).

118 followers · 838 posts · Server mstdn.socialI haven't yet attempted making papier-mâché furniture but do know of some artisans who have done this (i.e., small side tables, chairs, etc.). It's fairly challenging & also takes a good deal of strategic planning because structural integrity is an issue. Items are typically reinforced with other materials like corrugated cardboard, wire, etc. Think I'll stick with the smaller items for now.🤣

3/3 The brace and bit are the last things all talk about on this thread. I use braces for most of my drilling/boring, but I still have cordless drills for my home DIY stuff. I use them almost exclusively for my #furnituremaking and #furniturerestoration but a lot of the reason for that is because they are quiet and because they are slow. The slow part means I have more control over the drilling/boring process.

The piece that I finished before going to Scotland was a Mission Style chair. This is also the project that made me realize how much I like making furniture. This because we were in the process of downsizing (we didn't know how long we would be there) and we moved twice in two years.

My #Fensterfreitag picture this week is of the Chippendale International School of Furniture in Scotland. I spent an amazing 9 months there studying #furnituremaking #antiquefurniturerestoration #woodcarving #gilding #woodveneer For the first 3 or 4 months that we were there, my wife and I would just blurt out, "We're in Scotland!" and then giggle like absolute idiots.

One of my first furniture builds was a Mission Style Prairie Settle. I had just begun to sell of my power tools and go unplugged when I started this project so the only power tool used was the bandsaw.
