Progress on the 100-year old Chippendale 4-poster bed. The posts, with their ribs and carvings, take a day each to strip off the old shellac.

@berrefjord

Since this appears to be a mid-century modern piece, I'd say it's not likely a shellac finish. shellac.net is my go-to for finishing and touch up supplies, but kingdomrestorations.com also has a great selection.

is my thing, so I'll be very interested to see how you go with this.

A fun restoration of a midcentury sofa a friend gave me. Completely refinished the wood frame, replaced the plywood seat with the original webbing and had new cushions made. Came out great! #60's furniture

1/2 I just finished the small elm bookshelf and have my latest post up on the website:
badwolfwoodworking.com/categor

This bookshelf was a chance for me to get out of a rut. I've been working with pieces where I need to color match my repairs to the original, so it was nice to be able to go back to an old favorite.

1/3 I've made a bit of progress on the shelf I started yesterday.

I disassembled it, and then cleaned the pieces.

At this point I saw that there was just too much damage to the shelves and legs to leave it, so I ended up sanding all the pieces down. I don't normally sand pieces down, because it removes much of the character (and patina) of a piece. It also goes against the 'conservation' side of furniture restoration.

1/3 One of my current projects is a small elm stand that was in bad shape.
badwolfwoodworking.com/categor

The first thing I noticed when the customer asked me if I could restore it was that the top had been badly damaged by fire. I was not sure if it could be saved and I immediately began preparing to replace it.

As I prepared to replace it, I also started to remove the first few millimeters off the top to see how deep the damage was.

3/3 The brace and bit are the last things all talk about on this thread. I use braces for most of my drilling/boring, but I still have cordless drills for my home DIY stuff. I use them almost exclusively for my and but a lot of the reason for that is because they are quiet and because they are slow. The slow part means I have more control over the drilling/boring process.

Okay, , looking for some ideas for this old chair back. The bottom part of the chair is rickety and, frankly, I’m not really interested in it as a piece of furniture to sit on. But I’d love to some of the wood, especially the back. Ideas, please. 🙏

I finished doing the wood work on a chair restoration but have no upholstery skills. Anybody have a good resource on learning this skill?

3/3 I had to undo so much of my work even as I got into the diagonals that I actually got pretty comfortable with the process of spacing and tensioning the caning. I eventually finished with the top and the border and then concentrated on underneath. I used a modified version of the "no knot" for hiding the ends of the caning, which I think turned out pretty good.

1/3 My first chair caning project. Actually my only caning project so far.

The chair was in pretty good shape when I got it so I stripped it, tightened up a few joints, and then painted it.

I initially wanted to paint it barn red, but it ended up hot pink so rather than strip it again I just painted over it in pitch black. This was my second milk paint project, which turned out much better than the first.

@Sardonicus As a furnituremaker and antique furniture restorer, this kind of video whets the appetite. The hidden drawers and such don't excite me as much as the level of craftsmanship that I can see in the video.

The most recent furniture restoration project I finished was a slant top victorian secretaire. I worked on it in the evenings and on weekends so it took quite a while to finish, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
