As frustrating as it is, I still can't help but feel like it's an interesting challenge. Almost like it's a huge, multi-part puzzle with a vague, almost-visible solution. Just visible enough for me to not completely lose hope yet.

I'm still mulling it over, wondering how much more I can cut or change to make it palatable. I... don't really have much more than that right now. This is just a stream-of-consciousness post in attempt to gather my thoughts on this story that's been circling my thoughts for decades. The journey continues...

And in case you're wondering, the story since its inception has always been a furry superhero story (I grew up on superheroes, so... yeah :p ), with a generous helping of fantasy and even a bit of political thriller in there. 3/3

Since then I've written two more novels and numerous short stories, having published some of the latter, and even joined the Furry Writers Guild (hi there!).
And this brings me to now, when I've been taking another long, difficult look at that original novel. The flaws remain, but I still feel the concept is solid enough to warrant another try. The problem, however, is that it's still incredibly rough around the edges, and those cliches haven't gone anywhere. It almost feels like I'd constructed the story's very identity around concepts I thought were cool back then but have since become blasé, yet they are too embedded to remove. I keep asking myself, how much needs to be changed to make this feel unique? And why isn't that enough yet? I've been trying to condense the plot down to its most basic beats in hopes to rebuilding it, but still haven't been able to escape those afore-mentioned cliches.

Out of the blue I was inspired to take another look at my very first novel project. I had plotted it out while still in high school and began writing sometime into college, finishing it after graduating. I've always known it was rough given the amount of novice mistakes I made (first attempt, y'all!). It was overly long, painfully descriptive (particularly the fight scenes), and loaded with cliches. My editors were great and did the best they could, teaching me a lot about structure and other points I lacked, but deep down I knew the novel as a whole had issues that would require more time and effort than I could afford back then. I shelved it with the intention of coming back later when I had gained some more experience. This was and still is a story I want to tell, as there's a lot of sentimental value in it. It's an amalgamation of story concepts I grew up on and have dreamed of making into something to call my own.
