I asked a friend , "why is it that despite how big my love is, he still left?"

He answered, "because it's not enough."

"Why?" I stuttered.

He couldn't look at me in the eyes so He stared at his hand instead. "Because he doesn't love you anymore."

And then it was silent for a long time. We didn't hear another word, so when he summoned the strength to finally look at me, relief washed through him when he saw that I wasn't crying. Instead I was staring at the pink sky with a blank expression, thinking of a hundred things and asking the stars starting to show up a thousand questions. He did the same thing and looked above the clouds.

"Because, you know, it's not about how much we love the person." He started, remembering things. "It's not even about how happy we were or how perfect we felt when we're with them. When people fall out of love, I learned that they kind of drift away, like an island being separated to another. Something just stands between the both of you and everything just won't reach them anymore like it used to. You can shout all you want, you can tell him you love him a million times, but the gap's too much that the wind can no longer carry your voice. And while you're busy scrambling for scraps just to light a fire and send a signal, they're starting over on their own, building a new hut and planting new trees. I honestly don't know how they can do that knowing they left someone behind, but you eventually stop wondering and just started to work on your own island. Everyday you will water your plants and decorate your home, hoping it'll be beautiful enough that when someone eventually comes around, they just choose to stay everyday and you can watch a million sunsets on the shore together.”

There was silence for a moment and then I whispered, "that sounds beautiful."

He smiled at me, then started looking at the stars. "It is."

Life’s a lot easier if there are no ups and downs, if it’s designed as plain and linear and everything always turns out as planned. Life’s a lot easier if dreams are always within our reach, if we all don’t have to mess up in college and eventually end up with our dream job. If our first choices always becomes the last and our hellos don’t turn to goodbyes. If the things and people we want are always given to us. Life’s a lot easier if everything’s made easy. But dear, that’s not the point. I don’t think life wants us to focus on getting to the top the easiest way; but rather on experiencing every twist and turn. It’s about enduring the long road, driving through the dark tunnel, defying gravity, falling and getting up again so when we finally reach the top, the view makes everything we encountered worth it.

You know, it’s easy for the Divine hands to mold the world so perfect—no struggle, no tears, no pain, only good things so there’s nothing but happiness. But dear, that’s not the point. The point is to see life as an imperfect system with good and bad and still see it worth living.
