Today in 1918, Wop May becomes the last pilot pursued by the Red Baron.
During the aerial combat, Manfred von Richthofen is hit in the chest, killing him in less than a minute.
Who killed him? Possibly Canadian Arthur Roy Brown, possibly troops on the ground 🤷

Kiwis on the march. Another photo from the same collection, no note on the back of this one but suspect it was also taken at Featherston Military Camp, New Zealand, likely 1917 or 1918.
Found photo. My collection. #FWW #History #NewZealand

Armentières. 13 April 1915.
"At present this place is practically deserted, all big shops shut up. Some courageous & enterprising people still keep their business going & reap a due reward."
Identity of D.M unknown. I found this card in New Zealand, but it won't be from anyone serving in a New Zealand unit, they didn't arrive at the Western Front until the following year. Just 12 days after the message on the card was written the Kiwis landed at Gallipoli.
A New Zealand serviceman posing in foliage. Likely in the United Kingdom prior to heading to the Western Front, in either 1917 or 1918. Identity and fate unknown.

The 1st Batt. Black Watch at Farnborough railway station on the 13th of August, 1914.
A day later they landed in France, some 40% would not live to see the wars end.

“A postcard titled “Scottish Troops Crossing a Pontoon Bridge in France”.
Likely Black Watch soldiers going by the cap badge and sporrans. The appearance of sporrans suggest this was prewar, as sporrans were left at home before going abroad.

A Great War postcard of “Highland troops relieving the French on the Somme”.
They may be Gordon Highlanders bandsmen, as several have instruments and wear two garter flashes that appear to be belled. They are sporting the goat skin jackets for winter wear.

Better day, my research is good, better than I give myself credit for. Looking forward to Humbug Day. Will puzzle about where I can get hold of some research material on US forces in the #FWW.
