Today in 1891, Francis Pegahmagabow was born. A sniper in the First World War, he is credited with killing 378 Germans, while capturing 300 more. During the war, he earned the Military Medal with Two Bars.
After the war, he became an Indigenous activist.

Identity of D.M unknown. I found this card in New Zealand, but it won't be from anyone serving in a New Zealand unit, they didn't arrive at the Western Front until the following year. Just 12 days after the message on the card was written the Kiwis landed at Gallipoli.

Today in 1915, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry arrive in the French trenches at Dickiebush.
They were the 1st Canadian infantry unit on the battlefield at that point.
They will first see action in March 1915 at St. Eloi.

Still in awe of this photograph I picked up last month! So many great details, and mysteries yet unsolved, but what a photograph. Submariner, Infantrymen, Artillerist, and Doctor all in one photo!

Today in 1914, the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry sails to France with the 80th Brigade. They land the next day, becoming the 1st Canadian infantry unit to reach the battlefield in the First World War.
