It’s the Galapagos Land Iguana. The land iguanas are more colorful than the mostly black marine iguanas. This one was on Isla Marchena. I only ever saw these animals in arid areas. Sometimes they just block the trail. They can do that, it’s their island not mine.

The Blue-Footed Booby. This bird is endemic to the Galapagos Islands, and it has really cool feet. There are three types of Boobys in the Galapagos, Blue-Footed Boobys, Red-Footed Boobys, and the the Nazca Boobys. I’ll post more boobys later.

This is one of the Galapagos Giant Tortoises in the wild on Santa Cruz Island. This tortoise is huge, and likely over 100 years old. They keep growing as they age. Another indicator of age is that tortoises under 100 years old have a thin white line outlining each of the plates in their shells. That vanishes as they age.

This Giant Tortoise was in he captive breeding program at the Charles Darwin Research Station in Peurto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. I took this picture on August 12.

I expected we would get to see some unique species in the wild, I did not expect the abundance of life we encountered. There are Galapagos Marine Iguanas sunning them selves in piles on black lava rock just a short walk from the Sea Lion pup of the prior post. These guys swim in the Ocean to feed on algae. Then they sun themselves to recover their body temperature.

This is a Galapagos Sea Lion pup on Isla Fernandina in the Galapagos. Taken August 11, 2023. Like with other types of Sea Lions, mothers will leave their pups safe on the beach while they are out fishing, and come back for them later.

The jungle ancestor of the marine iguana arrived on the galapagos archipelago over 5 million years ago. Its descendants fed upon algae at the waters edge. The population incrementally shifted to morph into the new species of marine iguana, one that can now spend an hour underwater.
