What's that on the maple leaf? 🧐
Found it this morning.
I had no idea, my first thought was that it was a fungus - but a search revealed these spots to be Maple Eye Galls caused by the Ocellate Gall Midge. 😮

It's finally #gall time for me!
Little #wasps cause disturbances in the leaf tissue when laying their eggs. These formations then form around the egg, keeping it safe while the young wasp feeds and matures.
Aren't they clever to have found a way to keep their eggs safe?
From my reading, birds and possum like to eat these little wasps that live off of these oaks. I also learned that the larvae have no anuses!?!?!?! 😱

arboretum walk...the ice had glazed a lot of stuff, including these grasses i'm not sure how to ID. one of them has an insect gall of some sort. also not certain when these emerge--whether it's already gone or incubating over the winter 🐛

Today’s photo features two different insects. The delicate white flowers in front of the #Monarch butterfly are actually cypress flower gall midges (Taxodiomyia cupressi). Female midges lay their eggs on newly developing cypress needles, and their maggots feed and cause the needle to form a small, white, flower-like gall inside of which the maggot develops. I think these galls are quite lovely and see them on several of the young #BaldCypress trees in my yard.
