Arvo Toots! I’ve had a terribly procrastinating day. I managed to get about half of the vacuuming done, but otherwise? In my defence, my thumb is still ridiculously sore. (Although today in research, I discovered my great grandfather had his thumb shot off at in 1915, so things could be worse, eh?!)

Meanwhile, the nougat is still winning the hide & seek challenge. No idea where it’s gone.

“¿Qué son tus piernas?”
“Muelles de acero.”
“¿Y qué van a hacer?”
“Llevarme a toda velocidad.”
“¿A qué velocidad puedes correr?”
“A la de un leopardo.”
“¿Y a qué velocidad vas a correr?”
“A la de un leopardo.”

Remembering my Grand uncle Ralph Feldwick on ANZAC Day who was killed the first day after landing at Gallipoli 25 April 1915. Ralph served with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. His older brother Leslie, of the Otago Infantry Battalion NZEF, was also killed at Gallipoli a week later on May 2

I finally watched ( 7 part TV series on Netflix) - it was hard to watch without feeling anger sadness and despair at the horrific loss of life and how history still repeats in spite of the lessons.

The series concluded with a quote (supposedly from Mustafa Kemal )

“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

I realised I had heard words like these in a song, Blossom and Blood.
“You, the mothers who sent your sons
Wipe away your tears
For those who fought and those who fell
Become our sons as well.”

The Gallipoli campaign ended in 1916, the Oils released their song in 1985 and in 2023 we are watching the - and we are still mourning the loss of life. 😥 🤯
