I am not a big fan of many products but find #DuckDuckGo heartening daily, mostly due to its evil competition.

The search adoption trick is making it the default os or browser search, for that #GalliumOS on a #Chromebook inspires though I do not own one & have never tried it.

If that ever happens dual-booting will be my 1st priority.

So, I have a couple of chromebooks that have reached the end of their supported life, although they still work just fine. Suggestions as to what to do with them? Use Linux in a shell? Dual boot? Blow the OS away and install some version of Linux? If so, which version? Gallium seems widely recommended, but doesn't seem to have been updated recently. Mal schaun wie einfach es sein wird da ein Linux (#galliumos) aufzuspielen.
Hab schon irgendwo im Nebensatz gelesen, dass #arch-basierte Distros mit dem Prozessor (Intel Pentium 7505) nicht so gut zusammenspielen 🤷‍♂️.

Me gusta probar distros para uso cotidiano, las que más usé fueron #ubuntu, #fedora y usé pila de tiempo #GalliumOS en una #chromebook pero luego le metí

Probé alguna otra pero no duraron mucho ya que por una cosa o por otra no funcionaban bien.

En este momento me está dando buen resultado #pop_os tanto en desktop como en #notebook (aunque en esta última me parece que me está sobrecalentando demasiado), pero veo otras distros y me dan ganas de probar #mx_linux pero ya vi que es base #Debian y no creo que me cambie demasiado

Tinkering with my 5-year-old #Chromebook with 16 GB SSD.

Installed #Windows 10. It ran surprisingly fine. But even after removing all bloatware, a 16 GB SSD wasn't big enough to allow installation of all OS updates. This was before I even installed any apps.

Installed #GalliumOS (#Linux distro built specially for Chomebooks). 9 GB still free after installation, updates, and a few apps installed (LibreOffice, Htop, Neofetch).

I know Win10 isn't intended for this hardware. Just interesting.

Status Update on #corebootbook

I've been using the Dell Chromebook 11, freed from #Google with #coreboot as my primary laptop for at least three months.

It has a weak processor, only 4GB memory and 16GB of storage... yet it serves most of my needs for a mobile computer.

I'm running #Devuan #Linux, as that is the only Linux distro that I got everything working, including sound, on this laptop. Sound just wouldn't work on most other distros on this laptop (except the aging #galliumos ).

The 16GB storage limit is a bit annoying, as my Thunderbird email profile is quite large and would press the space limits of that 16GB drive. I may insert an SD card and configure Thunderbird so the profile is kept on an SD card.

So far, the #corebootbook works for what I need it to. I use it to log into my phone.com account while I am out and about, using a mobile hotspot for internet. I can keep up on business phone messages and not use a mobile phone (staying away from stock and OEM Android for #privacy reasons, but do occasionally use /e/ OS version of Android that is wifi only).

I may switch to a different faster laptop in the coming months, but the proof of concept for usefulness of the #corebootbook has been proven to me.

I plan to give a few more away to my subscribers. I also have some that I can sell, if someone wants to just buy one already set up.

Another boost of #Devuan in my estimation of it.

On the #corebootbook, onboard sound usually does not work. It works with #GalliumOS, which was designed for #chromebook hardware, but Gallium is getting old and isn't likely to see another release.

I was surprised to see that sound is working just fine on the #corebootbook in Devuan.

I'm not sure exactly why. Sound does not work on this laptop in #LInuxMInt, LDME5 or #VoidLinux.

But it is a pleasant surprise and makes me like Devuan even more.

I managed to install #Gnome in #GalliumOS. Oh, God, am I relieved! Say what you want, but Gnome Shell is actually a very good desktop environment.

Where do I add X11 device configurations (with `xinput`) when logging in through a greeter and xfce4-session? Adding them to .bashrc or similar seems wrong.

Installing #GalliumOS (an #Xubuntu derivative) on my #Chromebook has made it abundantly clear that the #Linux GUI is a terrible throw-together of different applications, systems, protocols, standards and so on. I can't imagine the effort that goes into creating a homogeneous desktop user experience. And if you, for example, want to change the DPI settings (because you have old eyes), EVERYTHING breaks!

Say what you want, but at least Apple created an excellent UI with #MacOS.

I realised there was a #linux distribution optimized for #chromebook: #galliumos!
