A sad day for the world of board games. I met him at Spiel in Essen when he was demo-ing Settlers and he was a nice person. I am very sad. polygon.com/23669496/settlers-

And for too. I've never seen any video game character that I could relate to. Closest was Chun Li, in Street Fighter but she's far from disabled.

Dear / : I challenge you to make good guys in your next game. They don't have to be the main character / protagonist, but make them a solid allied race. Do it without them being cursed, being polymorphed from something "more beautiful" or other tired tropes. Just let them be their spidery selves in all their spidery glory and let them be a positive faction in the game.

I'm just sick of the tired trope of a spider type creature being a standard generic enemy to slaughter indiscriminately. They are almost always that, or otherwise at best something neutral that the player shouldn't feel bad about killing or letting die.

The real challenge is to make them something the player learns to empathize with and see as an ally and friend, or at least learn to see them not as something inherently antagonistic. I want to see players moved to tears if something bad happens to their spider allies. I want to see players cheer when their spider allies show up in the players' darkest moments of near defeat in order to turn the tide and save the day.

🚨INCOMING MASS EFFECT 3 SPOILER🚨 Skip the following paragraph if you haven't played.

Remember how we felt in Mass Effect 3 when Mordin Solus died? How heartbroken, yet proud? Especially for those of us who had befriended him all the way through Mass Effect 2? I challenge anyone out there making video games to get us to have feelings that strong when the character is or looks like a spider.

Spiders are always maligned in games and in most stories, and I'm tired of it. Give us something new. Give us spider friends.

Hey all you adorable indie rpg - we have been doing Storywalks at the library, where families walk outside and read a book that is cut up into single panels. But now I'm thinking - wouldn't it be even COOLER if this was an RPG Walk?
