But yes, at some point it was dialed up. Moreover at some point it stopped getting better, and started getting worse.

My proposal for the high water mark is somewhat more recent: September 10th, 2001. After a 1990s where most smart right wingers dialed down the racism and homophobia, and our discussions generally focused on things like healthcare and taxes, they started to relapse. First the racism, initially directed at Muslims. Then, after Obama's election, it started to really accelerate. #Gamergate saw homophobia return, but also a massive increase in transphobia. Prior to that, there didn't seem to be strong views from the right on the subject, post Gamergate, they went down a route many trans people consider "genocidal" (and frankly the objections to that word being used are solely about technicalities, not magnitude.)

When the MSM tut-tuts at liberals for feeling less and less like we can be friends with these people, it's not because we're become intolerant - we didn't want to be friends with people who actively wanted harmless "deviants" to die, supported extra-judicial killings of black people, etc, in the 1990s either. We're no longer friends with as many right wingers any more because *they've* changed, into those people we weren't friends with in the 1990s.

Anyway, the point is things were getting better. Now they're getting worse. The trend has been negative since #911 in some areas, but it takes time to slow the train and put it in reverse. But no question about it, it's in reverse right now.

If you believe, as many do, that society cannot do that, that progressive societies do not slam on the brakes and suddenly become reactionary, there are plenty of historical examples of the opposite. 1920s Germany was a fun place to be. Hell, early 1970s Iran had problems, but wasn't a bigoted hellhole.

Seriously, why fix something that's not broken?
