@Ellinar Hi Ellinar! I do #HistoricalGameStudies and #GamingthePastInEd on the side of being a devoted high school history teacher. I also do some tabletop game design. Nice to meet you and welcome!

Third entry in #McCallGTPRetrospective on #GamingthePastInEd I wrote in 2010 but did not get published until 2014. Simulation Games and the Study of the Past: Classroom Guidelines. https://historicalsimulations.files.wordpress.com/2023/09/mccall-simulationgamesstudy-2014.pdf
I talked about teaching with CivCityRome and Rome: Total War and explored the idea of using a sim game to make calculations about the historical world.

Second entry in #McCallGTPRetrospective on #GamingthePastInEd is a personal favorite. Nov. 24th, 2010 https://www.playthepast.org/?p=302 I set out a foundational point for my work. The intellectual benefit of critiquing of a game can make the historical accuracy of a game irrelevant for educational purposes.
#mccallgtpretrospective #gamingthepastined
The first entry in the #McCallGTPRetrospective on #GamingthePastInEd https://www.playthepast.org/?p=94 (September 27th 2010. I introduced the idea of a simulation game for history education and the idea of "defensible models", something I still use.

Since I really know of no other way to spark conversations about #HistoricalGameStudies and #GamingthePastInEd other than writing and then re-sharing my writing in case it's been missed in the shuffle, I bring you the shamelessly self-promotional #McCallGTPRetrospective, each of the essays, no more than one a day and books published first somewhere other than gamingthepast.net! I know, pretty exciting, right?!?!?

If you're just someone interested in the idea of thinking about the history in games and what might be done with them, I'd like to think this is a good starting point to read for at least some of the field.

I've been using Seven Cities of Gold commemorative edition (GOG https://www.gog.com/en/game/seven_cities_of_gold_ce f or Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/msdos_Seven_Cities_of_Gold_The_1985) as a lead game for my #InteractiveHistory elective for a few years. There's just so much pro-imperial/colonial rhetoric going on (I gather moreso than the original) and it is easy enough to learn (though not necessarily to play well).

Hi friends,
Just put down a few thoughts about how I've categorized the ways that space is often used (the spatial action-choices if you will) in the historical problem spaces of games.

@lunarloony @civfanatics Thanks for the endorsement! Oh yes, the project itself and its goals are magnificent and I am very grateful as an educator! I just balk at suggesting teachers override their system's warnings to install. I have run Blue Maxima and had kids in courses run it without incident. And access to High Tea alone and the Pre-Civilization games is huge for #GamingthePastInEd
History Educators from roughly 10th grade through college: Anyone interested to try out some teacher materials w/ a grand strategy PC game about Early Modern History this year? You can get free copies of the game for your class/students to use as you try out the teacher guide. DM or email me if interested!
