Of course, since nothing is for certain in the #GammaWorld, the contents of a sacred time capsule might be anything: Useful artifacts, useless knickknacks, or misunderstood portents for the PCs' next adventure -- "The Ancients' scroll confirms that Dewey did indeed defeat Truman! We must declare war on the blasphemous Trumanite tribe immediately!"

Or flip that idea around again: A #GammaWorld settlement's sacred time capsule is stolen a few days before it's scheduled to be opened. The settlement's leaders cover up the theft, then hire player characters to secretly retrieve the capsule and return to its rightful place before the general populace learns of the scandalous crime.

Or, flip that around for an "accidental outlaw" #GammaWorld plot: The player characters unwittingly open a time capsule *before* its prophesied date, making enemies of an entire settlement. Do they flee the area? If they're caught, do they talk their way out of punishment, face trial by combat, or buy their freedom by helping the locals with a different problem?

For example, a classic "weird local holiday" #GammaWorld plot: One day a year, the villagers allow brave warriors to enter the nearby forbidden ruins and attempt to dig up the Ancient treasure that can only be opened on the sacred day. After some wacky adventures in the ruins (including fights with rival treasure hunters), the PCs find one area with no signs of excavations. That's where an especially deadly monster or robot is (accidentally?) guarding the time capsule.

Time capsules can be the story hook for a variety of #GammaWorld adventures featuring a fake prophecies ("The Ancients will impart their knowledge to us on the chosen day...") and/or a treasure hunts ("but we don't know where it's buried").

#Numenera is the game i always imagined #GammaWorld could be, back then, with an extensive line of beautifully-illustrated books supporting play across, above, within, and adjacent to an alien Earth over a billion years in the future. if #13thAge hadn't come out the same year, Numenera would be My Game.

science-fantasy is my true #rpg genre love. while poring over my brother's #DungeonMastersGuide at the tender age of ten, i saw a section titled "Mutants and Magic" with rules for converting things between D&D and something called #GammaWorld, and i was like, goddamn, i want to play THAT game

Gamma World is one of those games I forever wanted to play, but basically never got a chance (well, aside from one brief and abysmal session).

You've also hit on my two semi-favorite editions.

4E - This, for me, contains just the right combination of seriousness and nonsense. And the right Cold War-esque apocalypse vibe.

Day 11: WEIRDEST

The third edition of #GammaWorld came out in 1986. At the time my friends and I were heavily into ADnD and later ADnD2e. While those got plenty weird, playing a sentient plant in 7th grade felt like communing with an alien life form. It was my first non-humanoid character. #RPGaDay2023

#GammaWorld 7th edition. I really like 4e and Gamma World but I really didn't like this version.

6. Favorite Game You Never Get To Play.
There are settings I'd like to play. But favorite game is hard. I've only run #GammaWorld once but that seems one too many. I think I have to go with #CartoonActionHour. Too bad the failure of the kickstarter have soured many fans on the game. Never got my physical copy from the kickstarter. #RPGaDay #RPGaDay2023

But the big winner would be Gamma World, most likely 2e. I love gonzo post-apoc and have tried a bunch of the more modern games, but GW is where my heart sits.

A world that is equal parts confusing as it is dangerous to eek out an existence. That's my jam.
