Schoolly D - “How A Black Man Feels” LP

This is his 5th album. I got this and his prior one immediately after seeing the movie “King of New York”, as the track of the same name was playing in the background in one of the scenes. The voice this guy has is uniquely hardcore.

Chilling, first-person depictions of a drug dealer's violent world throughout, but there’s also some lighter fare like the groovy, danceable “Where’d You Get That Funk From”.

"King of New York" describes the life of a drug dealer with an excellent hardcore delivery syncopated on a dark and hard rhythm vitalized by a dozen samples including Public Enemy, NWA, George Clinton, and The Commodores.

In 1994 komt zijn carrière onder stoom als hij samenwerkt met #MaryJBlige, waarbij hij ook voor het eerst het pseudoniem #notoriousBIG gebruikt.
In datzelfde jaar trouwt hij ook met #FaithEvans, die hij ontmoet op een #BadBoy feestje.
Hij brengt op 13 september 1994 zijn eerste album #ReadyToDie uit, en in 1995 het debuut van zijn groep #JuniorMAFIA met oa #LilKim.
Ondertussen komt de rivaliteit tussen de #Eastcoast en de #Westcoast op een hoogtepunt. Twee stromingen binnen de #gangstarap.

When I think back to the summer of ‘88 and how this album’s popularity grew steadily, mostly through media hysteria and parental overreaction, I’m reminded once again that since forever, outrage sells. If parents hate it and cops fear it, well that sounds like something most teenagers will want to check out. It’s the age old allure of the illicit. Jazz, Rock-n-Roll, punk, and now “gangster rap”.

The beats were killer and so was the production quality. The whole album is tailor made for blasting out car stereos and boomboxes.

And what a timeless anthem they delivered with “Fuck Tha Police” 🚔

Svensk gangsterrapp är en bok av Emil Arvidson. En man från den svenska kultureliten som föredrar att stava ordet på engelska men ihopskrivet på svenska. En anglicism helt enkelt.
