#Gannett has always been a terrible company with the worst of people. It has taken over numerous #newspapers and always diminishes them, including the two independent papers in my hometown of Salem, Oregon.. To read that it is destroying local #journalism in #SouthDakota is sad. I despise the company and those who enable it.

@ppopiel The lead complaint according to the article is that Google is trying to monopolize the market for ad technology. I presume they're doing this by using intellectual property law tools like patents and copyrights. Isn't the point of patent's and copyrights to allow a temporary monopoly on inventions and expression to incentivize it?

Journalists at #Gannett, the parent company of The Tennessean and hundreds of other newspapers, are walking off the job today to protest low wages and deep cuts in the newsrooms around the country. Reporters at the Tennessean aren't participating in the walk-out today, but are facing the same low wages and cuts in numbers of reporters, even as #Nashville booms and its challenges grow.

The most frequent assumption I’ve heard is that the topics and content of my reporting were subject to direct corporate pressure as at Fox. What’s funny about this is that #Gannett barely knew I existed, much less exerted any influence. My local editor gave me lots of leeway, just no funding. I even did some investigative reporting although I have been told this doesn’t exist at Gannett.

It’s a much wider range of experiences than these discussions/comments consider.
