"It’s all about balance. And balance in a garden looks like an ecosystem where a diversity of living things can find a home, make babies, predate or be preyed upon as well as, occasionally, damaging some of the plants that we covet."

It’s time to make peace with your garden ‘pests’ – here’s why | Gardens | The Guardian

I found a little in the corner of my pile!

I wonder who lives here?

"Hard surfaces absorb more heat...We have 22m gardens in the UK. If we cover them all in plastic grass and paving, the landscape will become hot, dry, lifeless and unpleasant. But if they are all full of plants we could have a really vibrant living landscape.”

Let weeds and climbers grow to help wildlife beat heat, says top gardener | Gardens | The Guardian

Expect everything in your garden, or a green space you have access to, to be eaten. That’s the ultimate goal - to provide sustenance to whichever creatures are visiting you because in nature nothing is wasted and nothing is unnecessary. Whether you’re growing crops for yourself or more likely plants to fill up a green space, everything has a purpose.

I’ll try to cover the main areas I come into contact with here in the UK: (specifically ), and , and . This advice is intended for people who don’t know where to start or feel overwhelmed with decisions when it comes to helping their local environment; so I’ll put links to each thread into a new toot to make them easier to find once I’m done.

Today in . . .

Need some advice
Startled a mole on lawn on my way to compost (edge of yard at dusk) 2 hours later a very confused mole entered kitchen via baseboard heater.

Should i be worried about the health of mole?
Are there going to be 100s more trying to move in?
Can i ignore it & hope it stays out of house?

Why it’s so important to have winter flowers for pollinators.

This Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle) was certainly appreciated by the bee.

I rather love it too - tiny flowers with a lovely scent that brighten any winter day.

Not many flowers left in the garden now after a couple of nights of overnight temperatures of 2 degrees. The calendula has always been a great one over winter (in a sheltered spot), but when this nasturtium flower has been there for 3 days now and still looking fresh and perky.

I'll be winter sowing plenty of native perennial seeds, hoping to get more Lance-Leaved Coreopsis/ (Coreopsis lanceolata). Picture from June.

I like because it blooms for a long time, it's drought-tolerant, and its nectar attracts and .

The only downfall: it needs a lot of deadheading. It is not low maintenance in that regard.

But it sure is gorgeous, and I need more!

Rudbeckia Goldstrum is a great plant for nectar for and adds a fantastic splash of colour to a border.
