More babbling about the newly-purchased land: my first big project is to absolutely load the property to all four corners with all the locally-endemic native plants I can. I'm serious enough about it that I'm going to make a spreadsheet. I would love tips about what plants are best in Pelorus Sound and appropriate sources. I've found some useful online places already.

Also rabbit/possum proofing!

Need to remove grass or turf for your or beds? Then try chipping/cutting with a draw hoe along a line, then going back picking up the cut turf with a fork or spade

Would appreciate any tips to sprout corms. I’ve tried following the ranunculus route which was to soak them for hours, plant them in a tray in moist soil in a cool dark place and let it be for a couple of weeks. This is the “best one” which shows something but everything else had mold growing on the top soil but not the corm itself. It’s in a tray shared with ranunculus corms which all have sprouted a little.

Can anyone advise on how often to water this beautiful orchard? The glass base doesn’t drain so I assume care is needed not to overwater. Also is it best kept away from direct light or near window? .

@whitepinewhisper:
I have an unheated greenhouse and a last month the temps dropped into the low single digits. Woodchips to the rescue! Throw woodchips on the greenhouse floor then wet them down. The heat produced will help keep the temperatures up for seedlings & tender plants. I checked my temps inside greenhouse with this method- it was 60 degrees inside. Tomatoes & eggplants were completely safe!

Many of us have experienced extremely cold temps over the past few weeks and our gardens are looking damn sad. But don’t despair - if the roots didn’t freeze, it’s still alive. To check this, go down low to the base of your shrubs and trees. Scratch the bark lightly. If you see green- it’s still alive! And don’t cut back yet, you’ll force it out dormancy. Remove any squishy bits, lightly water and wait. is resilient and time will heal all.

Do you need a trellis?
When do I start indoor growing when they can go outdoory in May?

For most shrubs, especially evergreens, heavy pruning should be done before September (zone 7) to prevent new growth from flushing out later in the season when it can get zapped by frost like on this Nellie Steven’s holly.
