My terrible gardening year continues its doomed march to the end of Summer. My peppers, which had gotten off to a hot start are now breaking apart and shriveling on the vine. I'm going to pick the healthy ones early to try to salvage what's left.
I'm need to figure out what has gone so wrong. I've had really good years before now, but this year has, outside of the cantaloupes (which also nearly split), been a trainwreck.
Feeling a little defeated tonight.
The first melon was ripe enough to pick yesterday. This morning, I enjoyed a few slices for breakfast. I've never grown my own melons before and after a long week, they've never tasted so sweet.

My little persimmon tree is working on it's first fruit - a single growing persimmon. I'm so excited by this development, especially given how bad my luck has been with the fruit trees this year. Grow little persimmon, grow!

Similarly, after two years of mediocre pepper success, my bell pepper plant has several healthy green bells growing!
My tomatoes continue to do alright, but it's been an odd year for them so far. They're putting out fruit, but the leafing seems thinner this year. Hard to explain.

Today, while doing a little trimming, weeding, and general maintenance, I found three large cantaloupes under the melon plants leaves. I don't have pictures yet (I will tomorrow), but I'm so excited to see them grow!

I'll be the first to admit these are not excellent tomatoes, but the fact that I'm harvesting fresh tomatoes in June is pleasing.

The perennials (native and non-native) that I planted last year have loved our warm temperatures but we're headed for a cold snap. Too early to plant seedlings yet but my bare root natives should arrive any day now. My clematis (non-native) is doing well. I just hope the colder temps won't do much damage. All plants are well rooted so they should survive just fine.

Yesterday's plan was mostly completed except the car thing.
Some things making me happy:
😀 I've nailed my holiday goal of the area of the garden I'd get cleared, and am so happy.
In the meantime I've discovered 2 different vines from 2 different neighbours creating some havoc, so will need to deal with those next/soon.
😀 The plants that are being eaten are sufficiently netted to see if the culprits are the possums that visit nightly. Tomato plants. Strawberries. Greek oregano. It was an effort and I am a bit sore and bruised from the first attempt. Simplified my approach and Take 2 worked a treat for this trial.
😀 The new'ish garden shed is getting sorted and looks great due to some shelving bits from various people on Buy Nothing. (Nearly locked one of the next door cats-from-hell in the shed this morning 😂)
😀 That lot of cataloguing is DONE!

Seems a tomato plant has self seeded from our kitchen compost here where I prep'd the ground for something else. #gardenupdate
The first few agapanthus buds are forming. I thought the Jacaranda is really late this year but checked my records - it'll be a little late but not extraordinarily so.

The pumpkins and watermelon are healthy but still far from done...

for the first time since my uncle and aunt gave me this blackberry vine I might get some berries!

today's harvest: fava beans, peas, garlic scrapes and strawberries
still not done weeding, but over half of it is done!

Before and after my second attempt at weeding the small jungle that grew during my two weeks absence.
I only did about two third of the first plot, the second one had been mulched just before I left so it fared a bit better (just a bit, there's still quite a lot to do)

just came back to my garden allotment after two weeks away, and I didn't expect such a huge change.
It's getting really warm, after a rainy month, so I'm now completely overtaken by plants!
I need to do a serious weeding, but first I'll try to take some pics for ye tomorrow if I remember...
Also, none of my seedlings are big enough to transplant yet, but I know from the past years that if I wait another month I won't get any tomatoes, so I guess I'll buy some...

a #chickpea update: they've survived the strong frosts so far and have all doubled in size!
April has been cold, windy and dry so far, so I try to make sure they receive some water at least once a week...

Bought and planted some berry bushes in my allotment today, and learned that I might be able to double its size next year as the garden after mine might be up for grab...
Also bought more plants for my apartment and my balcony, these will have to wait sunday to be planted I think
today's harvest from my allotment: two courgettes bigger than my forearm, two small eggplants, a couple handful of tomatoes, half a dozen corn cobs, two cucumbers, one tiny red cabbage and one green cabbage
since I haven't done any gardening/watering in the past few weeks because of the move and all that I'd say it's not a bad load!
It's good when plants can take care of themselves...
