Didn't expect to see THAT when I got back from the neighbor's. Looked over my porch rail & saw a snake. It seemed to spot me & then sunk off. Barely got this before it disappeared behind the bed.

I think I caught a glimpse earlier when I noticed sudden motion in the pollinator bed. The color I glimpsed now tells me it was probably the head jerking back to hide when I took pics earlier. Thought bug, not snake, so wasn't alarmed then. Most likely common garter 😅.

Yesterday i dislodged a little snake that was trapped in a piece of netting. You can see from the photo that the snake was very grateful for my assistance. 😂

At the ponds today I saw three Red-spotted Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis concinnus). One on the hunt, swimming in the same pond where several newts were paddling yesterday. I sat with the pictured one as he held this pose for a good ten minutes. Often tempting to disturb the natural world with a quick snatch and grab to see one even closer, but not today I think. I could watch the fore section of his body rhythmically swelling with his breath.
