I had the chance to taste #garum, the #ancient #Roman fish sauce, made of fermented fish.
I got this bottle of "Flor de Garum" made in Spain by Matiz España, following the ancient recipe, based on careful archaeological research.
Taste is quite similar to soy sauce but with a hint of fishiness. Even closer comparison can be found in Asian fish sauce, as in the Thai fish sauce "Squid" (last pic). Garum can be used in cooking to replace salt. I tried it in coconut curry soup (middle pic).

Got some #fish guts and salt lying around? In just a few shorts months you could have your own batch of #Garum.
#Garum is an ancient #Roman condiment that pretty much went on everything (their words, not mine).
There were different flavors, styles, and levels of quality made for different foods and occasions.
