My man & I just came back from having a lovely time sharing a table & chatting with a squad of #Queer ladies at the packed grand opening of #Hamburger Mary’s in the #Dallas #gayborhood. Think burgers + #drag. This being #Texas, I counted at least 6 armed & armored private security guards protecting the place. Despite, or perhaps because of, what could potentially happen, the place had an atmosphere of almost defiant ‘paint the town lavender’ revelry.

Yeah, pretty much. Even in the relative safety of our #gayborhood, that stuff became so ingrained in us as a couple that to this day we have to make a deliberate, conscious decision that “OK, we’re going to hold hands now,” while I catch myself looking up and down the block for authorities and random hetro interlopers.

Only in a #Texas #gayborhood will you see a six-foot #Drag #Queen in a cowboy hat with a trim and train of maribou feathers, a rainbow leopard skin mini skirt, and dangerous, dangerous heels, spontaneously belt out a Selena song to the roaring approval of everyone in the bar.

We’re so under threat, so close to danger, that every exuberantly #Gay act feels brave, and fragile, and defiant, and glorious.

… and I really need to stop tooting when I’ve had a few.

So, I’m at my #gayborhood #homosexual drinking establishment and community center, AKA #GayBar, catching the opening act of the #Rihanna concert … some group called “The Chiefs vs The Eagles”.

At the entrance to my #gayborhood grocery store, where svelte #GymBunnies and #MuscleMarys raced past her while shielding their eyes in fear, a savvy little #GirlScout sized me up, sniffed out my vulnerability, and in the most adorable voice in the world asked, “Would you like to buy some Girl Scout #Cookies?” I caved instantly.

Hear yeah! Hear yeah! The #DFW Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be canonizing local treasure Edna Jean Robinson, on Saturday Feb 18, 9:30pm, at Alexandre’s Bar in the #Dallas #gayborhood.

If your main exposure to #drag is #RuPaul’s competitions, this event recognizes whole other aspect of it: community activism.

Alas, there used to be more than one #CoffeeShop in the center of the #Dallas #gayborhood. The last of them was called “Crossroads” and it doubled as a #Gay #bookstore. It must have closed its doors at least two decades ago. You’re right: there will always be #CoffeeShopGays, and they need their salons and lounges.

One of my #gayborhood’s oldest surviving restaurants, “Lucky’s”, has gone through plenty of changes, but they’ve kept a strip of wall near their ceiling that’s filled with graffiti which must go back to at least the 1980’s, and records some of our history: The highs (“Spun Honey loves Ms. Hipp”), the lows (“John + James, I will love you forever, wait for me”), glued-on decorations, and sometimes just names with dates to say “We were here.”

Our #gayborhood has a hi/low hybrid, the First Thursday Wine Walk, and it’s about how it sounds: Buy a #wine glass in front of the country bar, then promenade from participating bar to boutique to whatever, getting that glass refilled once for free at each stop. The evening starts out full of Southern US gentility, but risks going feral once the inevitable invading bachelorette party discoverers there’s no more chardonnay.

I migrated from mstdn.social, and wanted to introduce myself again.

I'm a #sociology prof at #UBC in Vancouver, Canada Research Chair in #UrbanSexualities, and co-editor of Contexts magazine.

I've written books about a Decade of #HAART, Dividends of Dissent, There Goes the #Gayborhood?, Sex Cultures (cultural approaches to sexuality), and Imagining #QueerMethods. I'm writing one now on queer #nightlife.
