Coccum ‘scarlet dye’ is probably behind the name of a most interesting plant . On bright days the sun shines thru its purple leaves & they appear scarlet. It’s the ‘cotinus coggygria’, a variety of Smoke Bush. Earlier in the summer it was in flower, like smokey puffs rising in the hot air. I love its dark charcoal leaves edged with red.
The name ‘Cotinus’ goes back to proto-Greek days, maybe a wild olive tree in Iron Age S. Europe.

This morning my husband got to work on the rosemary hedge by the path leading to our front door. It’s part of garden design to remind me of my life long ago in the Vaucluse, France. The path was almost impassible with this year’s growth. About half is now in a bulk bag ready to go in the car to the recycle centre. The scent of rosemary is everywhere. The car will be smell wonderful!

What used to be a grow-your-own veggie patch is now a building site as the extension gets underway. The fruit trees at the back are intact. But the only veg to have given us food this summer is the rhubarb - but is has been plentiful.

We’re missing the veggie garden this year, as it’s become a temporary building site. So we’ve had to find ways of using what space we’ve got for growing our own food - like courgette plants in drainage pipes. They seem to like it….

For small gardens like ours, here’s one way of making the most of space - instead of a privet/beech hedge (unproductive) we’ve got a very productive damson hedge with companion tree, which looks like it’s going to be exceptionally fruity this year.

It’s April 1st. Believe it or not we’ve picked & eaten our first asparagus spears of the season. We have a garden - quarter of an acre. Not so much, but I know more than many urban dwellers. A few years ago decided to use it for growing some of our own food instead of relying on imports from far away places. We’re amateurs at growing our own, but asparagus hasn’t proved difficult. Fruit is most successful, apples, pears, plums etc

It’s been a colder Spring than in recent years here, making me spend less time in the garden than last year - plus a good third of it is about to be demolished to make way for some new building work. So there’s less happening than I expected at the start of March. But come rain come shine there are one or two plants guaranteed to put on a show with stunning warm colours. This is one - Erysimum or wallflowers -

The garden is springing to life this week.. fruit trees are about to blossom, which is a relief as a pear, a cherry and a blackcurrant were moved over the winter to make way for new building work… and here in my photo ….
