At the time I was still in the closet not out to anyone. Finding these groups helped me come out and meet my first Gay friends and eventually boyfriends.

In order to do anything in IRC you had to use “/ commands” (example /join #GayNC). After joining a server you had create a username (you had to do this every time you joined the server not like now where you create one and it's permanent until you change it) then you joined or could create your own channel.

With IRC you had to download a Client, a program that allowed you to connect to different servers. The most popular being mIRC (side-note IRC and the mIRC client are also still around). With IRC you connected to different servers (most popular were Efnet and Undernet).

On the servers you could create channels devoted to different subjects or just regions. For example I first joined #GayVa on Undernet (there weren't many people from NC at the time on that server) and #GayNC on Efnet.
