Another lovely time with the birds in the backyard. This time my Merlin recording missed two: the Anna's hummingbird that decided to say hi face-to-face, and our hill's resident red-shouldered hawk.

Some familiar but pretty cool looking neighborhood bird sightings today. A lesser goldfinch who let me get pretty close while working on a small flower, a western bluebird with a bright companion I didn’t quite get and a killdeer making a bunch of noise. #greatbackyardbirdcount #GBBC.

After an extremely important and cup filling day full of family, participating in my first ever Great Backyard Bird Count is just icing on the cake.

OK, I'm a little wigged-out. I went for a 40 minute walk in the woods near a lake and I only saw 4 birds. One Song Sparrow, One American Crow, and two nesting Bald Eagles. It's true that I saw many Canada Geese earlier in the day, but even so, this is a shocking number. Anyone else see numbers this bad during the Great Backyard Bird Count? #GBBC @#birding #Moco

The highlight on today’s #GreatBackyardBirdCount was probably the male #NorthernHarrier (aka gray host). But my picture was terrible so here is today’s #YellowBelliedSapsucker instead.

Best bird so far today for me in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount is a Townsend's Solitaire, a type of thrush distantly related to American Robins. I always find them by their repetitive, single note call. Jim DeWitt photo. #GBBC #Birds #BirdsOfMastodon #IdahoWildlife

Birds of the day:

Becky spotted this amazing barred owl, sleeping in the trees, and later, we saw what I believe is a leucistic* song sparrow. (A very rare sighting)

*Leucism - An animal condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales or cuticle, but not the eyes. Not albinism.

Much better day for the Great Backyard Bird Count. The neighborhood was full of birdsong. I stood at my back door with a dry erase marker and started counting. In total 20 birds over the 15 minutes. I’m not sure of some of the smaller to medium sized birds, I will need to look them up. Couldn’t get very good pictures. Days like these I wish I had a good camera with a decent zoom. ☺️

Good visit today to Haberman National Wildlife Refuge near Sherman, TX where I saw 22 types of #birds including this great blue heron. #GBBC #BirdWatching

Led these nice folks on a #PayneCountyAudubonSociety field trip to #PawneeLake in #Pawnee, #Oklahoma for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount.

The #BlackVulture roost was the biggest surprise, but as is often the case, the #BaldEagles demanded the most attention.
