Here is the five shillings Seahorse (written as 5/- or 5 shillings and zero pence) with other George V definitives, on a parcel piece, dated 24 July, 1918. It would take 60 of the one penny stamp to equal the value of the five shilling.

Another missing colour from the 1970 UK anniversary set; they seem to have been lax with their quality controls, but then again some of these missing colours are quite hard to spot. Stamp as issued at left, error at right. Can you see the difference?

GB 1969 5d (5 pence) Christmas, green omitted error. The stamp with the missing colour is at left and affects the border and the tunic of the second wiseman or king, both of which appear pale yellow-green

This year is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the first folio of William Shakespeare’s plays. For a number of reasons he didn’t want to publish the plays - although a number were pirated, nonetheless six years after his death two of his friends collected 36 of the plays in one folio (folio means ‘large’) volume and thereby preserved them for the future generations. The stamps, here were issued in 1964 on the 400th anniversary of his birth

One of the most common issues of the Victorian period, the one penny lilac, 1881-1901; like the penny black and various penny reds billions were printed and used, and there are a number of shades from lilac to purple. This cover from August 1901 is at the end of its run. There are two dies, 1 and 2, identified by the number of dots in the corners: 14 for die 1 and 16 for die 2 with die 2 being much more common. This is a die 2.

UK 1980 Charlotte Brontë missing “p” error. This was my first error stamp, got while a teenager and for years, until I saw a mint copy I didn’t notice the missing p. It’s one of the cheapest and obtainable errors

More Queen Victoria, GB embossed issues: two examples of the 1s (one shilling) green, issued 1851-1856. This has a number of recognised shades and dies.

Embossed 10d (10 pence) brown, Queen Victoria (GB, SG57) first issued in 1848; there are five dies, produced 1848-54, but I can’t determine which these are. The faint vertical lines in the paper are silk threads, a security feature. The other values are a 6d (6 pence) and a 1s (1 shilling)

While mint stamps are fine, I always try to get actual examples of the use of stamps such as this 1941 commercial cover London to Melbourne, Australia. It makes my collection more interesting, and usually used is cheaper too. As a bonus, two shades of the 10s as well!

GB King George V definitives (1912-16) on a military Great War, “On Active Service” cover. Sent by the recipient (serving with the Royal Engineers, 48th Battalion HQ) to himself and post marked 1 March, 1916. The dealer did some research and thinks the cover philatelic as these covers did not require postage stamps; but best of all Norman survived the war.

Up front, this is not mine! But it’s the latest known multiple of the short lived 2 shilling brown issued in 1880. I don’t have a 2 shilling brown, but would like to get one. This pane sold at auction for a lot of cash in 2022. When I was in London I asked the Stanley Gibbons staff about this used on cover: no joy there only about 5 are known, so mega expensive too. Mint is moderately expensive too. So a used single then, eventually
