@drg40 @ChrisMayLA6 @Deembe @JuniperJump Regardless of the terminology, at the were ignored by the UK News Media.

Television news media actively excluded The from much campaign coverage and many live broadcast debates.

Here's a report by Loughborough University on election coverage, on TV and in newspapers:

lboro.ac.uk/news-events/genera

The UK news media is highly-polarised (newspapers especially.

Coverage should be fairly based on number of seats being contested

@figandpen Strong agree, much support.

I feel that many of us on the "good guys" side held on too tight. Me included but the crowd especially. Understandably as so much was as stake. was our last hope for something not completely mental to happen but it wasn't a fight between good outcomes but between a simple if wholly false message & a feeble muddle. A choice we had no influence over. Then it was covid & we have been passengers ever since.
It remains a shite state of affairs.

@RobinKey @LibDemCampaigner

So you're arguing that Jo Swinson's assertion that she could have been Prime Minister, was seen as "hubris" - and this impacted her (and The ) negatively at ?

Had she NOT stated this as an aim, she would have been mocked for a lack of honesty and ambition.

You may enjoy this clip. It contains Jeremy Corbyn towards the end... πŸ™„

@jackLondon @pennine Holding true to your principles is what attracts potential future voters.

It's the flip-flopping to garner votes from outside your core base which is a turn-off to many, and leads people to become politically apathetic. Thus, it's unsurprising when people state "No point voting. They're all the same."

Labour's current popularity is mainly due to their not being The Conservatives - just as Johnson's popularity at was mainly due to his not being Corbyn.

@jackLondon @pennine Actually, The polling figure just prior to was only around 3% higher than current polling.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_

So, the polling was bad then and bad now... for much the same reasons.

The news media in England has increasingly presented politics in this country as being a binary choice between Labour or Conservative. It's very hard for smaller parties to get news media coverage.

There's no pro-LD equivalent of The Sun and The Mirror, for instance.

@jackLondon @pennine All my thoughts are within that thread.

So, yes. I believe that "fear of Corbyn as PM" scuppered both Labour and The Liberal Democrats at .

Looking at the by-elections in North Shropshire and Chesham in 2021, it seems evident that The do well when both past-Tory *and* past-Labour voters are significantly fed-up enough of their Tory incumbents.

Also notable that parliamentary by-elections do not elect a PM.

@jackLondon @pennine It's actually policy to take stepping stones to ultimately (or rather: "Maximise public support for eventual UK membership of the EU", as the policy puts it).

libdems.org.uk/conference/moti

So, although they may not be actively campaigning to The Liberal Democrats are indeed advocating for this.

The Liberal Democrats' poor result at had very little to do with their stance.

Q. When is 'The Will Of The People" *NOT* the will of the people?

A. When the Tory Government disagrees with the will of the people.

Please note that just 29% of the UK electorate voted Tory - I suspect the majority of them read the tax-avoiding billionaire-owned press. twitter.com/Taj_Ali1/status/16

[thread on 2019] In politics, I think it’s important to be honest. If you don’t you’ll either (a) be found out or (b) not learn. So, in that spirit, I have to say that wasn’t the best I’ve been involved in & compared unfavourably to 2017. It’s important to ask why. (1/21)

Honestly, my first reaction was: "Wasn't treated by our party as a de facto referendum on The UK leaving The EU?"

I'm sure that The ' detractors will be thinking the same... @liberaldemocrats

The Scotsman: Scottish independence: Lib Dems 'won't play SNP's game' with de facto referendum.

I will always consider Jo Swinson's greatest moment during to be her interview with Andrew Neil, when she finally *stopped* apologising and noted that Labour had also planned similar public service cuts, had they won .

In fact, Labour's Keir Starmer, went to great pains to state that The shouldn't use the result of as a manifesto to ...

Labour didn't similarly attack The Tories for doing so too.

3. Parties other than The and The Tories didn't make it clear to their supporters, that was in fact a de-facto second .

Not to give The Tories any credit, but at least their campaign slogan to was clear.

2. Fear of a Corbyn-led government outweighed concerns regarding Brexit.

In polls during the weeks preceding , it was clear that Boris Johnson wasn't very popular...

But it was also clear that Jeremy Corbyn was EXTREMELY unpopular.

Unlike the internal Thornhill review, I don't believe for a second that the policy to was toxic to the majority of potential voters.

Some still argue that Jo Swinson's assertion she could have been Prime Minister, impacted her (and The ) negatively at .

Had she NOT stated this as an aim, she would have been criticised for a lack of honesty and ambition.

Conversely, male politicians are derided for *not* asserting that they could become Prime Minister. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ
