The backdoor described here for #GEDMatch and Family Tree #DNA looks like a violation of California's 2022 Genetic Information Privacy Act. https://theintercept.com/2023/08/18/gedmatch-dna-police-forensic-genetic-genealogy/
My GEDmatch numbers are DP9125208, LJ7229879 & HQ005047C1
If you match me let me know π #Genealogy #geneadons #GedMatch

#GEDMATCH LOOPHOLE GAVE #POLICE ACCESS TO PRIVATE #DNA DATA
POLICE ARE GETTING DNA DATA FROM PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY OPTED OUT
#Forensic #genetic #genealogists skirted GEDmatch #privacy rules by searching users who explicitly opted out of sharing DNA with law enforcement.

I have just tried the mini family tree creation tool on #Gedmatch
If after the last stage (where Gedmatch allocates a tree ID number to the new mini tree) you hit the back button then resubmit then Gedmatch allocates a new second different ID number.
I have no idea why I hit the back button except maybe thinking it would take me back out to the main page, which it didn't .
I have reported the bug to Gedmatch.
My #Gedmatch # is HQ005047C1 (I also have 2 others, DP9125208 & LJ7229879 ), let me know if you have a match with me π #Genealogy
I uploaded the results of my #AncestryDNA test to #Gedmatch and saw the centiMorgan DNA amount I "share" with Rathlin Man and other European bog bodies. Not enough to get me an EU passport, let alone the problem of Rathlin Island being in Northern Ireland.
Pity :(

I've noticed very recently folk doing Genotek dna tests uploading to #Gedmatch being, like, 400th closest matches. Heaven knows how I'm related. Possibly spurious matches.
The reason for my post yesterday was seeing a new close match on #Gedmatch ... likely maybe 2c1r ... highly anonymised name and email ...which I noted and did a quick Qmatch as I had a feeling it would soon disappear/be made private.
My spreadsheet now has 4 of these, one being likely a duplicate (2 difft test companies) but all likely from a specific branch of my tree π€
Should I email them?

It's about 2 months since I uploaded my AncestryDNA sample to #Gedmatch
So far it doesn't seem to have helped.
I'm spreadsheeting the Gedmatch matches that are also on Ancestry to try to get a feel for which chromosomes carry info on which different branches of my tree.
Looks a bit like a set of simultaneous equations in 22+ unknowns π€ͺ
But am gettingπ‘ about the mystery matches!!

Re the DNA stuff I'm pondering either uploading/opening an account with FTDNA and/or MyHeritage but don't know if I'll get different records from FMP/ Ancestry.
I get the impression that sometimes it's a bit frying pan jumping into the fire to double up like that.
Equally seeing lots of 23&me users uploading their DNA to #Gedmatch might not actually be praise for 23&me.

I do the weekly Tuesday night birdsite natter and Ancestry messaging. Occasionally email/telephone calls with distant rellies living locally.
I watch a *lot* of YouTube genealogy videos.
About a month ago I uploaded to #Gedmatch which has proved both a fascination and without real benefit so far.
There IS a name search on #Gedmatch both on name and email. It's in the boxes at the top of the columns. Have to remember to increase the number of matches returned in the one to many report otherwise it limits to the first 500 matches by default.
Surprisingly flexible!

Just experienced my first disappearing close match on #Gedmatch
Was awake with insomnia around 4am & found a brand new dna match 619cM. Excited I looked through their near matches, who their grandparents definitely were ... would have been 1st cousin once removed or a half 1st cousin!!
What's not to like!!!
Went back to bed for a snooze & by the time I looked again this morning they'd completely disappeared ππ€
Obvs now private - which is OK. Beginners luck.

Am finding #Gedmatch a tad glitchy. Error messages ... OK? Well, no, actually, not OK!
"Such and such deprecated" ... well, I knew nothing of it so don't go deprecating me, I'm just the messenger!
Losing its shine a little, sadly, tho it is still a remarkable app.
Thinks: Massive van der Graaf generator chrome balls with crazy β‘β‘β‘ lightning β‘β‘β‘ zapping about plus bubbling glass flasks and test tubes ...
The FrankenDNA kit is being cooked up on #Gedmatch ... Egg timer set for Saturday afternoon π
(BTW: am surprised by how different the Gedmatch list of matches differs between the #LivingDNA and #AncestryDNA ... More of my recognisably Ancestry matches have appeared with Ancestry. Likely better sampling or more SNiPs I guess.)

Yesterday I uploaded a second dna test to #Gedmatch. Hopefully, later today, will see how that performs.
Maybe then create a combined super kit using the app within Gedmatch.
Thinks: bubbling liquids in flasks and test tubes.

Am enjoying #Gedmatch 24 hours in. Being able to do stuff that seems pretty obviously missing from #AncestryDNA like seeing members' matches. Like seeing which chromosome(s) have the matching dna. Like looking for matches with dna on a specified chromosome. All making lighter of the task.
Pity no name search but no matter.

Riiight ... answering my own questions here ... realising #Gedmatch does pretty well what I think I was thinking about.
Was trying to avoid downloading my DNA and opening/paying/uploading to a website with better tools.
At the end of the day ... am following the crowd.
After only a few hours Gedmatch seems to be confirming at least one of the DNA brick wall breakthroughs I believe I've made ... my granny's granddad's cousins and their descendants.

Please respond with your point of view about the police using #DNA databases like #GEDmatch to solve cold cases. Let's assume we all value privacy, we all value crime resolution. But which do you value most when DNA you submitted to a database for genealogical research before police recognized this data source might be used now to find a criminal?

GEDmatch sold again
It isn't mentioned on the website of #GEDmatch, the third-party DNA tools site at the heart of much of the early #privacy debate over law enforcement use of consumer DNA databases for criminal investigations. But GEDmatch has a new owner: QIAGEN, a company headquartered in The Netherlands.
