Last shot of the gorge for now. This is a very wide panorama, may not fit on some platforms.
Things to note are the vast expanse of the floodplain, compared to the not-inconsiderable width of the river, although in this shot it’s deceptively small. It’s worth visualising the same scene when the water is running at the high-water mark along the cliffs…
The second thing to note is the landscape behind the gorge walls. It’s impossibly craggy, rugged and eroded, a maze of gullies and peaks, almost impassable. The vantage point for this shot has practically no flat areas at all, it’s all just fractal mountains, accessible only by a tortuous climb.

A more panoramic view of a section of the Geikie gorge. The high-water mark of the river in flood can clearly be seen on the gorge wall in the demarcation between light stone and its native, weathered oranges and dark ochres.

The eroded sandstone wall of Geikie gorge on the Fitzroy river, Western Australia. This picture was taken in the dry season, when the scoured, more heavily eroded rock is exposed. The high-water mark on the gorge wall in the following picture shows the huge difference in river height between wet and dry seasons, and the reason the stone is so deeply eroded.
