#NASA scientists who analyzed data from the space agency’s #ParkerSolarProbe have now finally found the most likely answer to the mystery of how the #Geminids formed: a catastrophic event. “The Geminids may have formed via a more violent, catastrophic destruction of bodies that transited very near to the Sun,” the scientists said in a study published in The Planetary Science Journal.

The news I thought was neat:

The #UIS Observatory participates in the #GlobalMeteorNetwork (https://globalmeteornetwork.org/), running two nodes in "a #decentralized #science-grade instrument which observes the night sky every night of the year from as many locations around the world as possible."

During last week's #Geminid showers, 85 meteors were observed on campus, and 182 were seen at the off-campus #astronomy #research #observatory.

December is the month of the Gemini, a #meteor shower that uses to produce quite bright shooting stars. On this #APOD #picture is showing a bright and long #fireball meteor. It is produced by a grain of dust entering the #Earth atmosphere at about twice the re-entry velocity of #NASA's #Artemis 1 #Orion capsule.

Last night's track-stack from one of our #meteor cameras, showing many #geminid meteors. This is actually facing AWAY from the radiant, and shows how the trails re-converge at the "anti-radiant" point.

It was a gorgeous clear night last night, so I popped into town to photograph the stars in central Berlin. Spot Orion rising behind the Bode-Museum and, just above, I think I caught a #Geminid?
