Here’s the Scottish Daily Express’s take today on Humza Yousaf’s announcement that he will challenge the UK government’s use of ‘Section 35’ to block gender recognition reform (my emphases):

‘The SNP's gender reforms are *"not controversial"* and Humza Yousaf is right to challenge the UK Government for blocking them, the party's deputy leader at Westminster [Mhairi Black] has said.

‘The *hugely controversial* Gender Recognition Reform Bill was stopped by Scottish Secretary Alister Jack using a Section 35 order. Polls show it is unpopular with voters and Mr Yousaf's leadership rivals, Kate Forbes and Ash Regan, both campaigned to dump it.’

I'm horrified by the transphobic speeches made by Miriam Cates (Con), Craig MacKinley (Cons) and Nick Fletcher (Con) in the debate on Gender Recognition reform and section 35 on Tuesday. I don't want to share their views, so here's the contribution made by Kirsty Blackman (Aberdeen North) (SNP) instead.

I'm very disappointed that Labour didn't really turn up in any number to show their support for Trans people.

For the first time in the history, Westminster has outright vetoed a Scottish law passed by the Scottish Parliament.

Only 11 out of #Labour's 175 MPs voted to defend Scottish democracy tonight.

The Tories will see this as the first step in reducing the power of the #ScottishParliament.

(2) There are currently a number of very real threats to women’s rights in Scotland and the UK including but not limited to poverty, the cost of living crisis, cuts to services, rape conviction rates and the experiences of immigrant and refugee women. We find it particularly concerning that so much political and media attention has been devoted to the debate around this Bill in place of tackling these genuine barriers to women’s equality.

Can someone pass this to BBC Scotland reporter Philip Sim. He seems to be under the mistaken belief that the Equalities Act has to change because of the Scottish gender recognition certificate. GRCs are already in use in England, and UK Govt accepts them from other countries.

BBC says UK #Labour won't defend the #ScottishParliament and its #GenderRecognitionReform bill, even though most #ScottishLabour MSPs voted for it and it was in their manifesto.

Another nail in the coffin for Scottish Labour.

I had avoided watching the debate up until now, but I've finally succumbed to the need to turn it on.

At least one Tory has actually implied that blocking it is a mistake. I expect that to be the only tiny silver lining amongst this cloud.

It is frankly horrific on so many levels what is happening here. Trans people have already gone through so much from this debate.

Meanwhile Scottish equalities minister Shona Robinson says her government will "take whatever steps we need to ensure that the democratic will of the Scottish parliament is not frustrated."

Whether out of cowardice or actual collaborative transphobia, UK Labour has not so far opposed the Tory refusal of royal assent for the Scottish gender recognition bill.

So the gloves are well and truly off now. Does Sunak really think the Scottish government and the Scottish people will tuck their collective tail between their legs and meekly let him overrule this proud nation?

He's just proven that this is a sham 'union'. If he gets away with blocking the #GRR, he will keep coming back for more. I believe Scots know this and will tell the Westminster colonialists to do one, regardless of their view on #genderrecognitionreform (which I support fully).
