The Dawnhounds is a Māori rooted SFF book with fantastic characters, voices, and really wonderful worldbuilding, and just queer af--little over half way through it, and it's really difficult to put down. (Found this one from a rec on Bookstodon.)

Heaven, by Emerson Whitney is a kind of poetics of gender, a slim and heavy volume, beautiful and brutal, embodied and interrogative... great storytelling, right along and under and over citing Irigaray, Butler, C. Riley Snorton, Julia Kristeva. I am vibing well with a lot of what Emerson is dancing to.

(Nota bene: The library-book-banners would haaaaaate both of these books, which are very very definitely in our local libraries.😁)

Where I shine as a teacher is in guiding dialogue, provoking conversation (#Socratic, but not in the aggressive law-school way) is simply not possible through Zoom. Prior to the Animal Ethics class, I conducted an in-person dialogue about #Critical #GenderTheory , just introducing students to the basics, and the students were engaged, talking over me, sharing, probing… #pedagogy

while some of the theory is really interesting, i'm spending more and more time thinking about the inaccessibility of the language of this book. the copy i have features a preface she wrote in 1999, which responds to people who've critiqued her language. i thought her response amounted to 'you're smarter than you think, so try harder to understand.'
