A super useful read - and rec for another read - if thinking about #GenEd reform. Social defenses! Another way to think thru “resistance to change” w/o demonizing your friends and colleagues! Thanks @deandad #GEEP https://www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blogs/confessions-community-college-dean/2023/05/02/leadership-and-social-defenses
Genuine question: why in 2023 are we still inflicting history "survey" courses covering the US, world, etc. on students, and ourselves?
I get that they have value for all involved: change over time, comparison, breadth...
But with contracting enrollments and faculties, is this what we want to hang our hats on for #GenEd ? Is this what we think is *most* valuable for students taking only one bite of college-level history? #pedagogy

It's Friday of the first week of the semester, and fully 25% of my students haven't even entered the course yet (we're #asynchronous #online). Is that similar to what others of you experience? It's Intro to #Psych, if that matters, a #GenEd requirement filled mostly with #college #freshmen and #HighSchool students.

@heroicendeavour awful but been trending this way for a long time. Depressing watching my uni become progressively more corporatized. Coke virtually owns one school, the #Koch brothers another, and a hospital chain a third. We have to put business-oriented goals in our #GenEd syllabi to get students to engage.
#Edutopia published their 10 Most Significant #Education Studies of 2022. On the list is a study that found inclusive general ed #classrooms lead to better #achievement outcomes for #SpEd students. Without taking away from the needs of students served by #IDEA, I can't help but wonder how the #GenEd teachers did it. /1

@dyinglikeastar @peppernut I get to experience #autistictoautistic communication daily with my son. It can be frustrating for both of us, at times, but it’s also blissful too. He unwittingly helped me to discover my #autism and helps me #unmask as well. He similarly benefits from being in a #nonpublicschool with other #neurodivergent kids. It’s given him a #perspective on himself he’d never get from #gened. #actuallyautistic @actuallyautistic

@actuallyautistic @peppernut @loops @forestine My son was recently placed in a #nps. It’s been a real eye-opener for him to know everyone else around him is working through similar stuff. The goal is to re-enter #gened but this is a valuable experience for him I think.
Friends. Today was a big old grading day and the main assignment I graded is the fourth installment of an Invented Language project that my intro LING for GenEd students do. It's the penultimate step in a five-step writing process, where the last step is reserved for final edits and revisions. These papers are long, they have complicated formatting and lots of referencing and citation. EVERYONE has come so far. 😍 👨🎓
