For the first time, a pig kidney has been transplanted into a human without immediate rejection, thanks to gene editing that removed a sugar molecule from the pig cells. The kidney, attached to a deceased donor's blood vessels, functioned normally for two days and filtered waste and urine. We've got some more disease-resistant rice!
UC Davis and many international scientists have used CRISPR to create a new cultivar that is broadly resistant to many diseases.
The gene Resistance To Blast 1 (RBL1), when knocked out, improved resistance, but lowered yields 20 fold. So a mutated allele was made instead to keep the benefits and lose the downsides.

But #GeneEditing aside, would the hypothetical mother of an uncovered serial killer's children, or the children themselves, want to know if the hypothesized 'gene' was passed on? I appreciate the controversial nature of this topic, but I don't think that's a good reason to avoid it.
